Upgrading to iPhone OS 3.0 Causing Issues

    On Monday, Apple released an announcement from Steve Jobs stating that, five days after it was first made available to the public, the company's iPhone 3.0 software had been downloaded an impressive 6 million times. That number, of course, is in addition to the more than one million people who have picked up an iPhone 3G S in the past three days.

    With those figures, it makes sense that some percentage of users would run into issues with the new software. We put a call out on Gearlog over the weekend, asking users what their experiences have been, thus far.

    While there some messages that suggested otherwise, the majority of the responses we have received seem to suggest that the iPhone 3.0 software works well when pre-installed on the new 3G S. When users download and install it themselves on older versions of the handset, however, things are quite different.

    We received a number of reports from users point to issues with their phones' battery life, slowed speeds, and crashing or a generally inability to run certain apps. A reader named Gary reported that, "t drains my battery in a few hours even if I am not using it." Tom had slightly better luck, writing, "my battery also drains in one day. It used to last three days."

    A number of speed issues were reported amongst users, many of whom have considered reverting the software back to its 2.2 iteration. Meanwhile, reader Dave tells us, "most of my iphone apps stopped working after downloading the new 3.0 software on my iPhone 3G." Jason added, "Also Facebook always locks up and won't allow me to move to the desired tab."

    Hopefully we'll be seeing a 3.1 version of the software soon that addresses most or all of these problems.

    When I upgraded my 3G to OS 3.0, I noticed a big increase in battery life. Which I am quite happy about. I can now leave my iPhone in 3G mode and not have it on EDGE. LOL

    Haven't tried it yet, but I heard a clean restore to 3.0 is the preferred option. Especially over reverting to 2.2.1.

    Hi Charlyee,

    As soon as I landed in the airport, my iPhone application picked up your negative post. ;)

    Judging by the 'chatter' on other forums, (hofo,macrumors, apple), where there are more iPhone users (and many more very critical ones at that, Yankee is mild by comparison) the upgrading issues were very, very small compared to the previous 2.x upgrades. So I don't understand the slant of this writer.

    I upgraded to 3.0 very smoothly, as instructed by Apple. I run 42 applications, including Facebook, with no problems as reported above. Battery life is the same. There was one big issue with battery life, the same day as launch, and that had to do with a Microsoft Exchange problem. My battery, and others Exchange users too saw batteries draining in less than half a day. The problem was fixed by someone (not via any update for the iPhone), by the late afternoon of launch.

    As usual some of the battery drain was caused by constant use to discover the new features :cool: Also, the other category of problems seemed to fall among those that previously jailbroke their phone and then did the upgrade...some residual things were left behind...but that is only judging by posters opinions.

    I cannot agree with the authors observations at all, judging by the 'chatter' in more heavy iphone users.

    P.S.

    It seems that I got a 32Gb iPhone 3G S for Father's Day. Haven't seen it yet, since I've been out of the country. :)

    I doubt there will be a 3.1 issued soon

    Thanks spleck, yes a clean restore is what is being adviced by AT&T also.
    Hi viewfly, I don't know why your iPhone interpreted my post as negative. It was meant to caution iPhone owners to be aware of the potential problem before they upgraded.;)

    I don't visit HoFo any more but the AT&T Forums were buzzing about this yesterday and some today and as spleck mentiones a clean restore was being suggested. I think it is important for people to be aware of this.

    Btw, none of the posters on AT&T mentioned a jailbroken device and many of them clearly stated that there's wasn't. Hopefully would be upgraders have heeded the advice given on that forum and by AT&T and their upgrade is problem free. I am glad yours did.

    Congratulations on your new 3GS device, now you are one of a million+ again. :D

    Because nearly 6 million users had success just doing the upgrade the way Apple intended, automatically. During the normal process, it seems a clean restore is done, since one can see the phone come alive after backing up with no non native software on board. The users photos, settings, itunes applications and music is then restored to the phone.

    There really is nothing wrong with the 3.0 upgrade or the standard process, only user error or impatience with the process. And the same with the battery issue, it not a real issue for many. I've done 3 upgrade myself last week, all standard, without problems.

    P.S. Thanks. Oh, the new glass coating is really good, btw. No fingerprints, or extremely minimized.

    I upgraded a iphone to 3.0 and it lost its activation and itunes would not connect.

    I had to restore the phone which itunes restored it with 3.0 and it works like it should minus MMS and tethering.
