As you may have noticed, the forum software has been upgraded. Please take a look around to see if everything works and looks pretty much like it did before. There are also a bunch of new features, like "Multi Quote", to check out. If you find an problem, please report it here in this thread.
Re: Upgrade Forums - Report Issues Here Is it intentional that for location, it only shows our zipcodes??? I kinda prefer the old way if possible... FIXED
Sorry to be a pest, but the USCC banner is still blocking the pull down menus at the top of the forum. Thank you....
on my PC at home, I couldn't use the quick quote button more than once when I visited. I like it. I still dont' have hover capability, though.
Joe, no issues. I love the feature where now I can read the content of a PM sent to me on the EMail notification. Thanks much for the continued improvements...
hi Joe. I now see the ability to upload pictures in our signatures. I tried to do this multiple times, both from uploading it from my FTP space, and from my computer. I get a message saying unable to save image. The image is in JPG format, and it is under the dimension & filesize requirements. Thanks, Jay
Reading the multi-quoted posts where there is box within box within box within box within box. I've never liked multi-quote on any of the forums it was available on. I was glad WA never had it. That's just my opinion, however.:googlyeye
Multi-Quote isn't necessarily box within box within box, it just lets you quote multiple posts and put your response under each quote, and do it all in one reply.
You are right, that can be confusing, but ConqSoft is also right. The way the feature is implemented here, I was ready to type my post with both of your comments after 2 clicks - a Multiquote click on your post and a Quote click on his. I love it! I have done this manually many times. The new way is much easier. Thanks!
Jay - Signature pictures have not been added. That is probably why you can't upload one. I'll check into what you are seeing.
Thanks! I think about the worst BBS software out there has to be whatever phonescoop forums use. IMO it's just dreadful.
Ahhhh... I stand corrected. I've done this manually, also and this way is much easier. This rules! I though you were talking about the way HoFo does it where you can have boxes within boxes, within boxes and it gets hard to read because, eventually, if you're one of the first people quoted, the formatting only lets you put two or three words on a line because your quote box is so small. Seriously, I love multi-quote.
Agreed. That is bad since it nests replies and becomes very hard to navigate when there are many posts. Maybe there is a better way of using its display functions, but I haven't found it. HoFo also uses vBulletin, but I find all the inline ads, popup ads, and keyword links to ads very distracting. I'm glad the owners/admins here are more restrained in their placement of ads. It makes a big difference!
On top of that, forums with tons of ads like that get plenty of SUCKERS to pay for premium memberships to remove the ads.
I don't know that I'd call people "suckers" who do that. The only reason why any board has ads whether popups or anything else is to bring down their costs. I hope you didn't think that their web host gives them their space for free! With a board as big as howardforums it's likely that the cost to host that site is considerable considering the traffic that it gets daily. Premium membership is another source of funding for the board. No one is forced to get it just as no one is forced to get a premium membership to Live365 to get rid of ads there as well.
I know what web hosting costs - I write the check every month. Even if it took 20 dedicated servers to run a large forum, the ads alone are bringing in at least 10x that cost and probably way more with pop-ups and keyword links. I guess I shouldn't call them suckers, but is mostly not true. I know that is the sales pitch. One other reason is to greatly increase the profit with benefits/features that cost practically $0 to give to members.
Phonescoop's forums are wretched and HoFo has too many people and is very distracting with all their ads. (Though, I've never encountered a pop-up ad there.) Regardless, WA is my home and that's why I'm always here.
Are you saying then that there is no cost to running a BBS? A board operator would have to be pretty silly to just put ads and popups just to annoy his members. If members wouldn't stand for it he'd have zero members. He must be doing something right since his board is probably the most active and has probably the most members of any wireless discussion board. The traffic currently on WA there are around 255 as I write this while over at howardforums there are almost 5700. Despite the popups and ads that forum doesn't seem to be suffering. And unless my eyes are deceiving me it sure appears that WA has ads as well.
