Ok, I qualify for an upgrade at the end of themonth, but I am unsure what I want at this point. There are so many good choices available, and coming soon. Here's what I have it narrowed down to, in no particualr order... Motorola Razr V9 Motorola V3xx in ruby red one of the new iPAQ's coming out HTC Tilt I have never been this close to an upgrade and had so many phones under consideration. I would like the Moto V9, but I don't like the color it is available in right now. I love the idea of the V3xx in red, and its a lot cheaper than the V9. The V9 doesn't seem to have that many advantages over the V3xx. I would like a new iPAQ, but the Tilt is also an enticing device. Oh, so many choices... -Jay
Wow, that's a tough list to go thru Jay. I do have to say the tilt looks neat, but I worry about the whiole slider/tilting part & if you sms a lot it will be a pain unless you feel the touch screen won't be too bad. a Co-Worker has the 8125 & he loves the phone & mods he has done to it. I really don't know what to suggest on this, good luck on a hard decision.
Wirelessly posted (Walkguru's: Opera/8.01 (J2ME/MIDP; Opera Mini/3.1.8295/1716; en; U; ssr)) i vote for the v3xx.
Wow Jay, that is quite a spread and you are actually considering moving away from Motorola's?. Here is my 2 cents, if you have been happy with the IPAQ go for it, my IPAQ PDA used to lock up and run out of memory atleast once a day but it was 2 years old, other than that it was quality built, ofcourse I don't know anything about how they perform as a phone. I really like HTC devices but I don't care for too many mechanical moving parts. If this is not a concern for you I would highly recommend the Tilt. As I mentioned in another thread I have heard nothing but good things about the V3xx from friends & co-workers that own them and I do realize that a handful of people had had problems with it. Much as I am not a Moto fan I am somewhat partial to this phone. In Ruby Red huh? Sounds neat. Lastly, I don't know anything about V9. What are you leaning towards?
Right now I'm not leaning in any particular direction. I would like to upgrade my current iPAQ as it is about 2 years old, only runs on EDGE data, and I run out of memory a few times a week. That's where the iPAQ's and the Tilt come in. Then there's the Motorolas. Two cool versions of the Razr. The V3xx is cheaper, and available in a nice bright red. The V9 has a few upgrades over the V3xx, but is a lot more expensive, and is only available in that awful dark red. If the V9 was available in the Ruby red as well then I would eliminate the V3xx from consideration. Now here's another twist... Mom's line will come up for an upgrade early next year. She probably won't want to upgrade (She loves her Moto L2), but if she does I can give her my nice spiffy black V3, then take her upgrade next year as well. I need to do some experimentation. My roommate has a V3xx. I'll take my SIM out of my iPAQ and see if I can use bluetooth data from the V3xx on the iPAQ. If so, I can get the V3 or V9 and get 3G data speeds on my iPAQ as well. Then I can wait until the price on the iPAQ or Tilt to come down some. -Jay
Here's some pics of the V3xx in ruby red, and the V9, so you can see the dreadful color the V9 comes in. Seriously, why couldn't they roll it out in black or platnium? -Jay
I can upgrade anytime I want, because there is no way in hell that I am buying a branded handset from my provider. I will pay extra to buy an unbranded and unlocked handset. Good luck with your choice.
I happened to be in my local AT&T store today & was looking at the V9, I agree the color isn't good & it seems wider then my V3xx, there was something about it I didn't like. It would be common sense for them to make it in the Ruby Red that the V3xx is. I wish they had the ruby red when I got my phone, I like the platinum but would have preferred the Red to go with my job.
I stopped by my local shop today and I have to say that I was really impressed with the Tilt. Really nice feel to the device, didn't feel like it was going to fall apart. The keyboard was nice and clear to read, and the buttons didn't seem difficult to press with my huge monkey fingers either. A big change from my current iPAQ, which I find the keys small, and difficult to read. It seemed like it would be a really comfortable device to use. I am pretty sure that the V9 is out of the running since I actually saw one in person and the color was even worse than I thought. Still no word on when the iPAQ's are being released, but I doubt they will be as affordable as the Tilt once released. The old model retailed for like $700 or $800 when it was first released. I think at this point I am down to the V3xx in red, or the Tilt. I still have about 2 weeks before upgrade time so I have pleanty of time to change my mind again. -Jay
At least you have it narrowed down to 2 Jay, I haven't seen the Tilt yet, it wasn't in the store the other day when I went there. Guess I need to take another trip to the store
There were only 2 drawbacks to the Tilt that I saw. The screen was smaller than my iPAQ, and there was no built in cover for the screen like my iPAQ has. I would have to purchase a case to prevent damage to the screen. -Jay
I did not like the color when I first got the V9 but now I can say, after owning it for a while, I do like it more and see it to be different than the norm. As to recommendations, well I can say I am leaning toward moving away from Blackberry to the HTC Tilt. I went by the local AT&T store and the sales person told me it was not out yet, and LOL as we all know it has already been released. I actually had to insult this person and asked him if he knows how to do his freaking job (man I miss my contacts in NY). I think he did not want to sell it to me for some reason as I got confirmation from some one else that they do have it and a heavy BB user has been telling to go for it (I never expected that from this person to tell me to go to a WM device). As to the V9, I can say the call quality is great and have not had an issue with it.
Here's a detailed comparison for everything I was looking at, the only problem is that the info for the iPAQ 910 is incomplete. Compare Phones (Phone Scoop) -Jay
3 words Network, Network, Network. There are lots of cool phones, smart phones, blackberry clones etc but if they dont work well with the network then it becomes a pain. Everyphone is different some do better than others. AT&T has a very diverse network the old ATTWS and Cingulars running 800 and 1900 and handoffs to between towers that go to different switching centers across dual band handoffs is tricky alone you have to bet on a good phone that can handle the 3G to GSM and vise versa hand off. I would check all of these phones to see if you can turn the 3G off and on. Plus your a Moto modder I dont know how much you can play with HTC and ipaq. Its always fun getting new phones. I get to play with new phones and some are cool but some look cool but sound like crap and dont hand off very well. One is my blackberry, cool data device but crappy phone.
I just came from my local shop again, narrowing the field some more. I think I will end up with a Tilt, as I was unsuccessful at trying to teather the iPAQ to another phone via bluetooth for internet. I will need a 3G smartphone/PDA if this cannot be overcome. ATT/Cingular has a fantastic network in this area, and I have not had problems switching between 850/1900 or GSM/3G. I really like the Tilt, and the manager of my local store said she hasn't had one returned yet, and everyone loves it. My biggest issue with the Tilt is that the screen is smaller than the one on my iPAQ. Since the major application that I run on my iPAQ is TomTom, a smaller screen means a smaller map will be displayed. My local shop is trying to figure out what the release date and cost of the iPAQ 910 would be, but at this point I think I am leaning away from the iPAQ to favor the Tilt, as the Tilt is already released, and has an affordable price. -Jay
I am sure if the screen is too small for the GPS part at the rate these devices are dropping in price it may work out to buy a TomTom or similar device. It does sound like you have your choice narrowed down pretty well & I am sure I speak for others if you do get this a report on it would be nice.
You will be amzed how well optimized these things got. I used the GPS on the Pearl (BB Maps and Telenav) and they were very good. I also used those on the BB 8800 and it is excelent. Now with the Tilt and the UMTS I think the telenav GPS will be flying with the data needed. I have made up my mind today and I will be getting this unit, once my contact gets it in stock again, he said his stock has sold out last Friday and it seems that many are going for this one. If its email system ends up being good, then I am most likely going to stop the BB use and change to the PDA data plan and stay with that. I think this is a great phone and I liked what I saw today.
I don't think the screen is too small for the GPS application, I just realize that the maps will be smaller, because the screen isn't as wide. If I bought a standalone GPS unit then I would buy a V3xx in red. -Jay
