Nope....you need the cable.

 

There isn't a generic answer to this question. Some non-OEM cables work fine, like some off-brand Nokia DKU-5 imitation. Some other cables may not fare as well. Also, you may need to get some drivers that are not available from the manufacturer if you go that route. In short, unless you know that particular non-OEM cable works, it's better to avoid them.

 

Here is the CA-53 cable I got to update my 6131. It worked fine and did not need any additional software for using with Windows XP
