The only way that's gonna happen is if you call Cingular and they're feeling generous that day. Sometimes they will do that, but generally only after you at least 1 year into your contract.

You only need to have your contract 90 days in order for Cingular to unlock your phone, getting them to give you an unlock code is a different story...

If you have international roaming on the plan and 90 days as a customer you can get it from them . Beats paying the CROOKS over on howardforums a arm an a leg .

I've never actually done it either, but if you have the unlock code all you have to do is place a different carrier's SIM in the phone and power it on. the phone will ask you for the code. Enter it and you're unlocked.

This is however dependent on you getting the right code from either your carrier (If you're lucky), or a third party vendor (for a fee). If this doesn't work then a data cable is required to unlock the phone.

    1. Unlocking Nokia GSM's is easy. Simply download a calculator, enter IMEI and provider ID# and it generates the unlock codes. I always use #7. I prefer "DCT 4 Calculator by Cyberdog and Hollowman". There are many others. Some models present problems so do thorough research prior to using..you only get 5 chances.

    2. I used www.mobile2mobile.net for unlocking my V330. You download their app. Connect your phone to computer. It queries your phone. If it can be unlocked, it alerts you. You then buy a "credit" for $25, enter the credit code and it unlocks the phone. Elegant and no hassle.

Mobile2mobile.net can also unlock many other types of phones..check for your make/model to be sure.

If your cellphone was purchased in a prepaid account as GoPhone they (Cingular) will need that you had your service activated for the last 90 days before giving you any unlock code. If you bought it at regular full price (no discounnts or subsidized) in a service contract account you may request for the unlock code at any time. Otherwise you need to complete your contract to obtain the code. Or as Jay say, maybe the customer service representative feels generous, why not give a try?
