I've been seeing a lot of v3m phones on eBay advertized as "unlocked" but this seems to be a misnomer. They mean it'll work on Verizon only. Other "unlock" software merely unlocks the "full features" of the phone, not its carrier ID. I was coming up on my 2 year end-of-contract, and didn't want to be locked in (no pun intended) to another two years. But RAZRs are expensive and if I need to walk away from Verizon I want this phone to be useful on another network. Is there any real unlocking software out there for sale or even free? I don't need it super fast, but would like to have it in case I switch carriers. I've done a lot of searching but have come up with nothing.

    Thanks!

The problem with CDMA phones is that they use the phone's ESN# to identify it on the network. This doesn't happen all the time, but the carrier can check the IMEI# and quickly determine if they originally sold the phone or not. If they make this check nothing you do to the phone will get it past them if they didn't sell it originally. With GSM phones this is a different matter. If you put your SIM card in a phone from another carrier it won't work unless the phone is unlocked. My guess is that the people marketing their CDMA phones as "Unlocked" are either misinformed, or are marketing to persons who are misinformed. (Unlocked sounds better, doesn't it?)
