    I can't speak for all areas of CA, but in Bay Area the only way that T-Mobile can get hurt is if they lose towers. Right now both GSM networks are full of holes and that is compensated for on Cingular by T-Mobile roaming. T-Mobile can't roam on Cingular, so their holes are always there. Are you saying there could be some financial penalties for T-Mobile?

    There are some give backs in the network turn over that were with in the agreement. T Mobile needs time to cover those give backs and if the agreement is finalized T mobile can end up suffering. The same thing holds true in NY, their map has changed since 10 months ago (especially in LI) and now one can see way too many gaps as to compared to what they had before.

    I'm sorry i meant to say that T-Mobile has their own network and they are getting the Cingy Cali network

    and why has TMO's network gotten worse in NY?

    i can imagine that the agreement that has been advertised by Cingy and TMO has some underlying extra terms that they havent made public such as those give backs as you stated.....

    The Cingy Cali network is the only network T-Mobile has in CA/NV.

    Because they never had the liscence in Cali. They entered into an agreement with Cingular where T mobile was able to provide service in Cali and Cingular would be also be able to provide service in the NYC/LI areas.

    Cingular doesn't broadcast their MNC on their own network in California either, so at least in that regard it's all fair :)

    NO, T-Mobile owns the old Cingular network, the network Cingular owned before they bought AT&T. When Cingular bought AT&T they sold their native network to T-Mobile with the agreement that for the next 4(i think) years Cingular would be able to roam on that network until they built out the AT&T network enough to cover the areas that the old native Cingular network covered.

    "T-Mobile USA to End Network Venture with Cingular and Acquire California/Nevada Network and Spectrum

    Acquisition Positions T-Mobile USA for Strong Growth

    BELLEVUE, Washington - 05/25/2004 — T-Mobile USA, Inc. ("T-Mobile USA"), the U.S. operating subsidiary of T-Mobile International AG & Co. KG ("T-Mobile International"), the mobile communications subsidiary of Deutsche Telekom AG (NYSE: DT) ("Deutsche Telekom"), today announced it has entered into agreements with Cingular Wireless LLC ("Cingular") to terminate their wireless network sharing joint venture and for T-Mobile USA to acquire 100% ownership of the shared networks in California and Nevada for $2.5 billion. The purchase price of $2.5 billion for the GSM network in California/Nevada will be offset by $200 million related to the unwinding of the joint venture, resulting in a net cash payment of approximately $2.3 billion to Cingular. In addition, T-Mobile USA will:

    provide network services to Cingular under a wholesale arrangement until Cingular's customers in these markets transition to the networks it will acquire through its pending merger with AT&T Wireless Services, Inc. ("AT&T Wireless");

    replace its existing roaming agreement with Cingular with a new nationwide agreement with improved terms;

    transfer 10 MHz of New York spectrum in exchange for certain California spectrum owned by Cingular as specified in the termination provisions of the joint venture agreement;

    acquire an additional 10 MHz of spectrum from Cingular in certain key California markets for $180 million; and

    receive an option to acquire an additional 10 MHz of spectrum in other key California markets from Cingular within two years.

    While the joint venture has owned and successfully operated the networks that service both companies' customers in these markets since its formation in 2001, this new agreement with Cingular is expected to position T-Mobile USA for continued operational success and strong growth in the future.

    "Consumers will be the real winners from this agreement," stated Robert Dotson, CEO and President of T-Mobile USA. "With this agreement, our customers can be confident they will continue to enjoy the reliable, high quality service currently provided by our world class network in California and Nevada without interruption. Also, the nationwide reciprocal roaming agreement ensures that our customers will have access to the nationwide networks of T-Mobile USA and Cingular, providing them with the greatest possible coverage."

    "As a result of this agreement, T-Mobile will continue its dynamic development as one of the growth leaders of the U.S. mobile market," said Rene Obermann, CEO of T-Mobile International and Member of the Board of Management, Deutsche Telekom. "Within a short period of time, T-Mobile USA has built a customer base of nearly 1.7 million customers in California and Nevada. We anticipate that more than 20% of all T-Mobile USA's new customers will come from these markets."

    Deutsche Telekom's projection for the T-Mobile USA customer base at the end of 2004 has increased to more than 16 million. The estimate for the long-term customer base has been increased to between 30 and 35 million from current market estimates of around 25 million over a ten-year horizon.

    The wholesale arrangement for network services provides T-Mobile with a minimum guaranteed revenue stream of $1.2 billion based on network usage over a time period of up to four years. This agreement provides for the orderly transition of Cingular's customers off the networks in California/Nevada and New York City and ensures more efficient use of the California/Nevada network as T-Mobile USA’s nearly 1.7 million customer base in these markets continues to grow to utilize the additional capacity being vacated by Cingular's customers.

    The additional 10 MHz of spectrum T-Mobile USA will acquire for $180 million as part of this transaction is in San Francisco, Sacramento and Las Vegas. The purchase option for an additional 10 MHz relates to spectrum in Los Angeles and San Diego. T-Mobile USA will continue to have the use of Cingular's spectrum currently utilized by the joint venture until Cingular's customers transition off the networks.

    The transaction is subject to the approval of Cingular's acquisition of AT&T Wireless by U.S. anti-trust authorities and the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), and other regulatory approvals. Closing of the transaction is expected for the beginning of 2005.

    When T-Mobile first offered it's service in CA, it didn't have it's own network, it used PacBell/Cingular network. Prior to 2002 there was no T-Mobile service in CA.

    More here.

    what i got out of that was that there was a T-Mobile and a Cingular network in Cali but they were being used together as one network being shared by both companies...........now that deal is about to expire and its bad because Cingular and T-Mobile actually both still need it.........they need more time to put in patch towers to cover up holes that will be made by the expiration of this agreement

    Yes, there are holes in coverage of both companies and both need to fix them, or at least keep the roaming agreement going.

    the roaming agreement would potentially cost more money as the customer base grows for the 2 companies..........fillin gin the holes would be cheaper in the long run

    Filling in the holes would be better for customers, too as the handoffs between T-Mobile and Cingular towers don't seem to be happening during conversation.

    I just thought i would give all of you guys heads up, my dads company is changing from sprint/nextel for their ptt service (which they have had a multi multi multi multi multi multi billion dollar contract with since nextel hit cali) over to Cingular for ptt and Better coverage. My dads company is one of the fortune 500 companies in the U.S. So we are talkin about millions and millions of phones Sprint/Nextel is loosing! And Cingular is gaining. This is just one more fact that makes it even more true that Cali is not a sprint State. I would say it is 65-70% a Cingular State And a 25-30% Verizon state. The rest is a T-Mobile, Metro PCS (LOL) or Sprint/Nextel state.

    thats why Sprint has the SERO plans to attract customers and rebuild their customer base............a lot of the Nextel customers are going to leave if they are being asked to migrate over and they dont see a QChat that matches whats they are losing..........i think that they should do the migration as soon s possible............get Rev A upgrades pinished and migrate..........dont lie around like sitting ducks.........thats one way you will lose customers..........not paying attention

    Wow, that sounds like it's going to be a blow to Sprint/Nextel, when they do this some feedback on how the PTT works if possible would be nice.

    That was just a shameful failure. They weren't really interested in reviving their PTT after being put to shame by Nextel.

    My feeling is those numbers between Cingular and VZW are much closer than you suggest -- does anyone know where to find the subscriber numbers broken down per state?

    It was a mess, but according to their web site it's still available:

    http://www.verizonwireless.com/b2c/...viewFSPlanList&typeId=2&subTypeId=2&catId=322

    http://www.verizonwireless.com/b2c/...tion=priceSort&typeId=1&subTypeId=1&catId=322

    I also noticed their prices are similar to Cingular's PTT, but they just include it as 1 price and not as an additional add on for either $8.99 or $19.99 a month.

    To be honest, i agree. I just over did it a little with the Cingular #'s. But i still think that Cingular's numbers are higher than Verizon...

    It would stand to reason, since overall Cingular is #1, VZW is #2. Plus, there are areas over some Western states with no Cingular coverage at all and VZW presence, which would probably mean that in shared areas Cingular has an even higher margin. Yet without any concrete data it's just speculation on our part :)

    It's interesting to note just how far this thread has gravitated from the original subject :)

    And I am still waiting for a nice package that will inlcude unlimited SMS, Unlimited MMS and unlimited medianet access for a price of $39.99 and no more (add $10 for family plans and I would not mind if they also include tethering with it too).

    I'll keep my fingers crossed for you, but I don't see this happening any time soon :( Thanks for bringing the thread back on track though :)

    While I think the bundled packages are fine as a "value" option as to individually priced plans, imo - they really also need to add back a good selection of individual feature plans to the mix.

    I just went over on my data for the first time!!! :p And I never come anywhere close to using all of my texts - the "gaps" between the current plans are too large, and without having individual plans to mix & match, it's impossible to come up with something that's going to work well in every segment. However, as many have said - I do keep "voting" with my $$$ each month. :banghead:
