I'm going to be getting my first ever cell phone and have narrowed it down to either Unicel or U.S. Cellular for my plan... which one is a better deal? I live in the Bangor area and I think I'm going to geta regional plan, but I can't decide between the two services. Any input at all would be great, thanks so much!
I believe U.S. Cellular is better, coverage wise, but somone more local will be replying soon, and will be able to tell you more. Search the forums and you will see threats talking about the two.
I live in Portland and travel to Bangor and the surrounding area alot. I would choose US Cellular if I were you. They have the most coverage in Maine and it is usually very good. Unicel is in the process of deploying a new cellular system (GSM) and is having alot of trouble. Not to mention, their GSM coverage is much less extensive than US Cellular. Go with US Cellular: better bang for your buck. Hope this helps.
I live in New Hampshire, but travel to Maine often. I agree with the previous posters, US Cellular is a better bet for you. Their coverage is more extensive and of better quality, and their customer service is excellent. Plus they have a good variety of phones available. I have had US Cellular since 1997 and have been very happy with them. I have a Regional Plan covering 9 states. Rumor has it that they will be coming out with new National plans as of April 3. Not sure if they will also be changing the Regional Plans at that time. One additional selling point for US Cellular: Their customers roam on Verizon's system when outside of Northern New England (Mass, Ct., RI, NY, etc.). Not sure whose systems Unicel uses outside of Northern New England. GSM (Unicel) is not yet deployed as extensively as CDMA (US Cellular and Verizon) so you will be able to use your phone more places if you go with US Cellular. -way
Thank you all so much; this has been a big help! I think that I'm probably going with U.S. Cellular thanks to all of your posts.
I tend to agree with most others here, but have also been following the Unicel rollout very carefully. A friend of mine signed up on Unicel's GSM plan in Keene, mainly cause USC does not offer a competitive national plan, plus his wife has Unicel for work. He's had great luck with it in Southern VT and NH. Rumor has it that USC is going to finally bite the bullet and release competitive national plans around 4/3. They pretty much have to do that. USC and Unicel only providing n/w and m2m in their local areas is pretty smart, since most people hang out in their home area most of the time. The heavy roamers ought to find a different solution.
