My girlfriend sends me text messages (doesn't matter if it is replying or new text) and when I receive them (about 90% of the time), I get duplicate messages (usually within a second of one another if not at the same time, but sometimes up to 30 seconds apart). This does not happen to her when I am sending a text to her (ever). I am not in a dead zone when this happens. I have a Samsung Blackjack. She is a Verizon customer. Neither CS calls (Verizon or Cingular) have produced any viable results. She has had her phone replaced, to no avail. I am going crazy not just because of the additional charges but having two messages every time we talk (and we text a lot).

I have other friends with Cingular, Sprint, Alltel, and Verizon, and no problems except coming from her. Hers is an LG VX3400 and I couldn't find anything via Google that suggested it was a frequent problem.

Any help ASAP would be appreciated. This is driving me nuts! Has anyone ever had this problem?

This doesn't sound to me like it would be a handset related issue to me. I would have her put in a call to Verizon's tech support at 1-888-233-4813, and see how the text feature is set up on her account. They can also review the text settings on her phone to make sure that isn't the problem.

They already did. Then they reset her phone. It still didn't work so they told her to take it in to a Verizon store. She spent an hour and a half there and they ended up giving her a new phone. Later that day the duplicates were back in full force.

Does this happen with other people that SMS you? either being an AT&T or Verizon customer?

If not then the problem is on her side, with Verizon. Also does her phone have the option to reply with the original message, I don't think this would have anything to do with it, but I wonder if that is causing the problem as well.

No it happens to me only with her text messages. I have friends with a plethora of different services, to include Verizon.

It does it if she originates the message or if she replies.

Then it sounds like there is a problem with her account causing it to send duplicate SMS.

How about to another person, does it do the same to them when she sends an SMS?

She says she hasn't had any complaints from anyone else, but I don't necessarily know.

Very intriguing problem. I have had sporadic duplicate texts from friends on just about every provider from time time but never on a consistant basis or to the point of becoming an annoyance.

What does the number of messages sent show up on her account, or in othere words the the system recognize the duplicate messages as two separate messages?

Can you ask her to send a message to herself and see what happens?

You can't really tell because the breakdown on the bill only goes by minutes, not by seconds. I already tried to determine that but it became futile.

There should be a seperate section of the bill showing SMS usage & it's not tied into the call usage by minutes.

    There is.

Here is how it appears on my on-line statement.

No no, you are misunderstanding, sorry. I guess I wasn't clear enough (my fault). I mean, you can see the text message, but I get so many you can't differenciate. Meaning, if I get a text at 1100am, 1100:25am, 1100:37am, and 1100:43am it shows on the bill as 4 text messages at 1100am.

It complicates matters because the bills are usually several days behind (at least on my end). I guess I can count how many she sends in one day and check several days later to see how many I got charged for.

It maybe worth a try and I would ask Verizon to re set account again.

One last question, has it alwys been like this or did it just start?

PS: I also misunderstood sorry. :)

No it started about a month ago due to no particular reason (not because of a new phone or new contract).

I tried talking to tech support for you, just to see what kind of answer I would get regarding this strange issue that you are having, but the Rep. who I spoke with either didn't understand my question, or wasn't very knowledgeable about this type of issue.

I got you now, sorry I misunderstood. My suggestion is not to SMS anyone else for a 15-30 minute period except her & see how they come across on your online bill when it's available.

As your friends not to send anything say from 9PM to 930PM, then if they are showing as double on your bill, it's information she can give Verizon the next time she calls.
She should check her online bill as well to see what it shows during this period & if it's showing as 2 or 1 SMS at the time it's sent.

(Keep the SMS at least 1 minute apart for a better picture of what can show up on her & your bills.)

I have one more idea and this maybe quite farfetched but I will post anyway. :)

Has she changed anything in the way she is initiating or replying to a text message. For example in some of my PDA/Smartphones I can send and post duplicates by hitting the back button instead of exiting gracefully.

I usually leave my phone on the text message screen if I am having a conversation, maybe she can do this for a while and see if this helps.

If that fails, I would keep asking Verizon every so often to reset her system.

    Good luck :)

This has happened to me on a couple of messages. It went away, so I have no clues other than to try texting from another area for a few hours.

Lately on verizon at times I am getting delivery errors when sending messages, but they go through anyway. I think cause I use a Treo, and it doesn't support longer txt messages, it may cause this problem. Is is true that some phones can handle longer sms than 160 characters?

Already happened to me, I joined VZW less than 30 days ago... I'm lurking until this issue gets down to a better definition.

BTW reprogramming my phone always frees up blocked messages and corrects the issue.

With my Razr I can type beyond 160 characters (some have been really long) & when I send it the phone says sending 2 to 5 pages depending on the length, the person I sent the SMS to said they see it all as 1 page & not like the old way of recieving the amount of pages & having to read them seperatly.

I think the manufactures have worked on this & it does make the long sms easier for both parties & 1 of the people I sms & I have sent a few long ones to has a Treo.

all VZW and Sprint phones limit texts to 160..................most OEM motorolas can be like 500 or 600 sharacters but it cuts the text message up into bits but thats interesting how it sends as multiple pages but is received as one long message.........ive never seen that happen before...........i always receive 161+ messages in separate pages......Sprint RAZR

Not entirely true. My wife's V and my mother's enV both can send longer messages.
