I'll be traveling down through the gulf states and through Texas next week. I have AT&T GSM. Can I expect to have service for all of my trip? I'll be staying along the major highways and urban centers.

You will be covered by Cingular is not by AT&T Wireless. This will make almost perfect coverage for you with barley any problems.

That's not entirely true. It's a ROAMING AGREEMENT. You're covered by your provider because THEY are paying the roaming aggrement.

No it is not for Cingular/ATT

since Cingular is aquiring ATT they don't have a roaming aggrement. It is a merger, which means you get both cingular and att GSM nationwide network

so if you do not have ATT GSM you will get Cingular GSM (and not pay roaming or anything about or for roaming due to merger of networks)

It just may mean that AT&T and Cingular are paying the company that has coverage money.

The companies aren't merged yet, or next week, which is what the OP was asking about. So there is a roaming agreement in place between the companies, and they pay each other for usage on the other network. Although likely, there is no guarantee the merger will be completed, so a roaming agreement is in place. As you noted, once the merger is completed, that eliminates the need to make payments.

No they are merging with each other (therefore no payments or roaming aggrements)

they are merging networks so they later in the year (hopefully in october) they will merge completely as a company named Cingular

Therefore they already have intergrated networks
