So my buddy stopped using Alltel and gave me his Moto Q. I went to alltel to activate it on my number and I guess his line if froze so I had him call customer service to activate his line so they activate the Q on my number. Well I guess he owes some money to alltel and they said they would do anything to the number till it was paid. Is there any way around this? I mean its just transferring a phone.

There's generally no way to get a phone tied to an account with an unpaid balance activated on another line. Phones are tied to that account by their Electronic Serial Number, which is required to be put into the system to get the phone activated on a new account, to prevent people from cancelling service and not paying the bill. And there's no way around this that I know of.

The only way that I know of to make the phone available for your use, is for your friend to pay the final balance on his account. There are also several other reasons why, after he has some time to think about it, he might find it wise to pay the balance such as a better credit history and credit score for future purchases. Even if he wanted to pay the balance and sell the phone on eBay, he probably wouldn't lose much, if anything in the grand scheme of things.

If it's working why would you need to flash it? (Other than it doesn't work since it's assigned against your deadbeat friend's account that owes money).

No it works I was just seeing if flashing it would make it work on my account without having to wait for him to pay.

Of course not. Flashing it won't change it's ESN, which is tied to his account until the deadbeat forks over what he owes.
