    Hi Everyone,

Semi technical mom has a kid whose Alltel phone went kaput. Can u buy an Alltel prepaid phone and have the number transferred to it? I know that with companies that use sim cards u can do this by buying a sim card to go into the prepay phone. Finding a way to do this sure would save me money. We tried the thing of purchasing a phone online but seems like we keep getting duds. They work a month or so and then die. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks Again,

    Nicksmom

That's a good question. Although, I don't use Altel I did the same thing with my Cingular phone when I threw it against a wall. However, i did have to find a wireless store that had the ability to unlock the phone.

As far, as I know the phones are locked for that very reason. And for others I'm certain. So, things to do Nicks mom.

Call around to some indirect Wireless Stores.. (Where they sell more then one wireless carrier) and ask them BEFORE BUYING THE PHONE. If they are able to UNLOCK the phone, If they ask why, Say you have an Altel phone you want to use on Verizon Wireless or Sprint PCS.

In my situation, I paid for the prepaid phone ($39.99) and ($15.00) to have a indirect store unlock it. All was well!!

Hope all goes well for you!

If the phone is or has been on Alltel you can likely use it in another Alltel account either prepaid or monthly billed. The only consideration may be if the phone is very old and doesn't have GPS capability some companies may not activate it on their service.

Alltel is a CDMA carrier. CDMA phones cannot be "unlocked" in the same way that GSM phones (from AT&T and T-Mobile) can.
