To get this new section off to a good start..... :attn: :attn: The first 5 people to submit 50 cell sites each will get a marvellous WirelessAdvisor.com stainless steel insulated mug! (see picture below) Rules for this contest: Everyone, except admins., is eligible for this contest. Previous winners and moderators ARE ELIGIBLE. A cell site with more than 1 co-located carrier counts as 1 cell site. Duplicates do not count. If someone submits a cell site before you, it counts for them and not you.
Wow. A new forum. I will have to start taking some photos when I have time too (hopefully after my finals are over with). Thanks for the new forum JFB! It is a nice new addition to WA.
Sure, cameraphone pictures are fine. Besides you can always replace the picture if you get a better one later on.
I'm not paying T-Mobile $2.00x50 for MMS just to win a mug. I mean, it's a kick mug, to be sure, but it ain't worth no $100! I can get an inexpensive camera for less than that.
$2 per picture at T-Mobile :speechles Who would ever take a picture with their cameraphone? What about this pricing: http://www.t-mobile.com/services/picturemessaging/overview.asp
Oh, heh-heh, oops. I thought $1.99/MMS seemed a bit ridiculous. I browsed that info when I first signed up but have never had a cause to use the MMS. If I found all 50 towers in one month I could do it for $5... not such a ridiculous price for a cool mug. However, based on my initial searches I don't believe that there are 50 towers in my county and the three surrounding counties. I feel a tower hunting trip to Topeka/Lawrence/Kansas City coming on. Still, I'd probably borrow a digital camera for better images... and zoom. Thanks for the info on picture messaging, JFB. The really upsetting thing is that Sprint does not have any native service in Manhattan or the surrounding counties, according to their tower locator. They must use CellularONE-WWC or Alltel's towers. So the Sprint towers I was counting on finding don't exist. FCC tower search here I come!
Sprint does have coverage in Manhattan so they must have towers. Just because they're not shown on the tower locator map doesn't mean they don't have them. They could be provided by an affiliate.
Great test for my 5600. I will have to go to Las Vegas to get 50 towers. I just wish Greyhound would resume their normal pickup schedule for my area.
Any "Minimum" amount of information necessary??? I s'pose folks could just go mad snapping away at random towers... radio broadcast rigs, television microwave rigs, anything, and then just post em' up.
The minimum is just the city and state -- there are fields for other optional info. The mods will just delete any that aren't cell sites.
True. I've heard they have at least two... I may have pictures of them but I'd never know. I think I pretty much got all the towers in and around Manhattan today so if you see any that look like Sprint when I get them up, let me know.
1/2 a tank of gas... $10. 3.2 Megapixel Canon Power Shot A70 borrowed from tattoo shop... free. Spending most of my day off driving around on a tower hunt... priceless. So I managed to take pictures of pretty much every cell site in the greater Manhattan, Kansas area today and two from Junction City, Kansas. 2 may or may not be cell sites but I've got at least 15 that I'm sure about. Too bad I need 50 because I think I'm done.
As soon as I get my Moto V635 I will be using its megapixel camera to capture some sites around here.
I do know what you mean about doing this, I have been having alot of fun doing this & waiting for someone to call the cops on me. I have quite a few to do just in Union and some other towns near me, hopefully tomorrow & Sunday I can get more.
Well, if you come the the REAL Manhattan (the BiG Apple instead of the Little Apple) all you need is like 2 blocks and you'll get your 50 towers!
To All - Thanks for getting some great pictures up so quickly! It is kinda fun! I realize that some areas aren't as densely populated as others. Once this contest is over, we'll think up others that aren't so dependent on sheer numbers. Something like ugliest, most stealth, etc. Any contest like that would apply to your entire submitted collection, so if you see a cell site get a picture!
Heh, I know what you mean. I thought for sure the Alltel engineering techs were suspicious of me... they may have called the cops if I had asked them to let me take a picture with them instead of just snapping a pic of one of their trucks. But where's the fun in that? I kind of like the idea of having to drive a while to hunt down the towers. There's a few near here I didn't get that I might do on 4/21/05 but I'll never have the fun I had on 4/14/05. Not really knowing where the towers were, trying to get as close as I could, finding ones I didn't even know about until I saw them while driving... it was geekily awesome! I just know that nothing can ever compare to my first tower hunt and I thank JFB and WA for giving me a reason to do it... and by the way, Bobo, what makes NYC the real Manhattan?
