Although Dell sucks a lot.. I heard that model was one of their FEW good ones. And that is a good system. But if you tend to travel with it you won't like the big 15.4" wide screen.
gasp!!!!! :speechles Is that an Area-51????? I so want one of those!!!! I envy you now what do you play on this?? I wanted one coz I want to be able to play Lineage II on it but these babies are so expensive....well, the real powerful ones are....and does the eye of the alien really glow in the dark on ur laptop's cover??? ang
Right now I play Counterstrike Condition Zero... it's not hardware intensive. Waiting for Half Life 2 and World of Warcraft. The config that I chose wasn't expensive compared to some of the other guys I speak to online, those guys spend $3500-$4000 which is way too steep for me. Here are the specs: P4 3.0 ghz 15.4" WSXGA 512MB PC3200 DDR RAM 60GB 7200RPM HD ATI Radeon Pro 9600 w/ 128MB DVD/CDRW Combo 802.11 a/b/g All for $2613 Yes the eyes do light up: blue at startup, green for normal activity, red for standby.
Thinkpad T series ( I have a T23, but there are newer, thinner ones) OR Powerbook G4-- I think next time I buy, I am making the switch. Extremely cool computers. My friend has a Inspiron 600 m. While it has nice features, there is a deign flaw that causes repeated creasing of the screen since it hits the keyboard. Dell has to keep seinding someone out to replace his screen. He will never again buy a Dell. Also, you are on hold FOREVER with them. The prices are lower, but you do make some sacrifices. As for VAIOs, I have heard that while they look cool, they are not as durable. Thinkpads may not look flashy, but I think they are well built and the keyboards are excellent. I believe with the newest, the T42, you can even get DVD burning. Both the Powerbook and Thinkpad are not the least expensive choices, but I think you would be happy with either as the build quality is high.
HURRAY! I finally recieved my new laptop. Its a Dell Latitude D800 It's got a Pentium M running at 1.7 64MB Video Card 512MB Memory DVD+RW CDRW Modular Drive 15.4 inch WXGA Screen
I got a laptop last month for college (I used my new desktop last year). I hate laptops, but my roomate goes to bed at like 10, and I go to bed at like 2, so I wanted to be able to use a computer in the living room. I got a Compaq, I have no real complaints with it, and I got a heck of a deal. 3000 Athlon-XP 512 RAM 32 Megs Video Card 60gb Hard Drive 15.2 Inch Widescreen DVD/CDRW combo drive All for 950 after rebates. I got it at CompUSA, and let me tell you CompUSA is fast with rebates, I got my 150$ check in 2 weeks! My cousin (who's going to be my roomate this year) has a 2 year old Dell laptop, it was around 2300$ in 2002. That thing is a POS. Everyone I know with a Dell laptop has problems. My friends with HP's have had severe problems. Everyone I know with a Compaq (even though it's owned by HP) has not had a problem. I don't know anyone with Gateway or Toshiba laptops. Good luck with the new Dell....you may need it. Overall, laptops suck lol.
Typically the Dell Inspirons are garbage. The Lattitudes is the better line. IBM, Sony, Toshiba are decent. I don't know anyone who owns a Gateway anymore, seems like they fell off the planet. HP and Compaq DT's, I wouldn't recommend since I use them at work and have had a good number of problems.
I really want to get either a Apple Powerbook G4, a Fujitsu (I forget the model... it's in the C series I think), or a Premio Kaypro (once again, I forget the model). As for Alienware, they maybe fast and stylish... but they're extremely expensive and I heard about some problems they might have. As for Dell, I have one and I -cough- dislike it. Stupid Inspiron 5100... someone buy me a new one! Lol...
Dell Desktops are pretty good whether it's the Dimension or Optiplex. With Alienware, only a small number of people I've spoken to have had major problems. Things ranging from bad video cards and RAM to getting the wrong color, etc. As for me I have not had one problem yet in 2 months. Can't believe I'm going to say this but... they're not that expensive. I configured mine for around $2600.00. I only say this because other guys on the forum I go to have $3500.00-$5000.00 machines.
I second this opinion!! I bought one about 4 months ago and LOVE it!!! It's my new baby (along with my a670) and I have so much fun with it!!! I even have an older version that everyone complains about and I don't seem to have gotten one of the lemons (knocks wood quickly)... Powerful machine, great graphics and great AppleCare service...
--Kicks Laptop--- I hate mine and all of you gots good ones . Lol... but glad to hear yours works TwoPeice. I might get one if I had the cash, but I'm starting to hate Windows a lot .
That apple powerbook is very nice and very expensive! The sony vaio's are nice too but whew buko bucks too! :speechles
Hm. I would not rave about AppleCare. They do the right thing -- send you a box to send your PB back in -- but it took about 18 months and 3 back and forth shipments of my machine to finally fix a power supply problem that my brand new powerbook had on the first day a few years ago. I actually told them that the power supply was the problem and it took them that long to figure it out (in another life, I was a Mac tech). Oh, and that was the second of two Macs I've owned -- both had a bad power supply on the first day. The first Mac was essentially DOA. Also, I am not blown away by the durability of the G4 Powerbooks. The Pismo was the last great Powerbook, IMO. The original G4s had tons of problems: the paint, the hinges that stick out, the battery latch, etc.. The new ones are much better, except now the lid rocks back and forth when it's closed! I'm going to wait until the next generation of PB, then I'll probably go back to Mac.
The purpose of the new PB's lids "rocking back & forth" is because they have more space between the LCD and the keyboard...I guess in earlier versions, the LCD laid directly on top of the keyboard, resulting in an imprint of the keyboard on the screen!!! The newer ones have the "gap" to reduce the incidence of this happening... As for AppleCare...you're right that I've never had to actually "send in" my PB, but when I call them for a software conflict or a problem (with past computers...haven't had to do that with my PB *knocks wood*) they are very responsive... Just my experience!
Right, except that the rocking is something that 2c pads on either side could fix, like every Powerbook ever had before the G4 (See top edge of this Lombard. But no, in Apple's eyes, having that would ruin the aesthetic ... that's the attitude that drives me crazy. At some level, you can't sacrifice every functionality for fashion.
You're right -- it's not about the expense. But for the money, I expect to get something that's built well. Anyway .. it's moot, I decided long ago to hold off to see what Apple has up their sleeve later on. My cheap, light Compaq that's somehow also built like a tank is still working great for me (although it's a P3, and a bit slow now).
