    Hi all,

I just signed up with T-Mobile. I want to test it for a week to see if it will work where I need to use it.

One of the annoying things is that the time doesn't automatically reset from the tower. Are all T-Mobile phones like this, or just the $1 Samsung R225m that I have?

    Thanks,
    Tim in Hollywood

Tim you must have come from either Verizon or SprintPCS, they both use CDMA technology which uses GPS at the cell site to time sync the mobile and base station. This is where the time comes from, it is free info that comes from the magic of the sats in the sky.

It is possible to do this in GSM, (all 3 Nokias I have support it) but the carriers don't implement it AFAIK.

i like having the time set from the tower. this way i know exactly when my night minutes start etc........

also i checked my phone time to the atomic time online......i kept refreshing the atomic clock and after timing the minute change on my sprint phone to the website it was within 1 second of us atomic clock time kept by the navy observatory or something. it is quite accurate.

I'm pretty sure Cingular's GSM network automatically sets the time, so I'm not sure why TM isn't doing it.

Cingular's GSM does not set the clock automatically.

I don't know of ANY GSM provider that sets your phone's time automatically. Nearly every CDMA provider does, though.

That seems to be true, ALLTEL (CDMA) also sends you the time via your phone. Personally I wish TDMA/GSM carriers did support this feature.

Is it me or are we getting extremely desperate in our attempts to complain.

Nah... not really.... We're just making a point that it's a convenience feature, and once you've had it for awhile, it's rather annoying NOT having it, although it's hardly something to factor into your decision on which provider to choose. The one thing I like about it most is that it auto-adjusts your phone's clock when you cross timezones. That's a big plus, in my book.

Lets face it folks, we're cell phone geeks. It's fun to discuss these features that distinguish one technology from another. I LOVE the fact that I can set my watch to my phone time! I was disappointed that my T-Mobile phone didn't have this feature.
