Well, never say never!! I am in Orlando, Florida, but not to see Mickey or Goofy-(No comments Charlyee). I am here on business. I am not proud to say that my own love of technology "Did me In", so to speak, earlier today! Ok, here goes. Two months ago I bought a new car, and I babied it for 5,000 miles, until today. Being the "50 Year Old" boy that I am, I "Blew it Out", so to speak, on Forida's turnpike. I am usually very careful, and have safe driver written on my license, however, today I reached speeds that would make NASA astronauts proud. I hit 115mph, and then throtttled down, knowing that I was going fast, very fast. So, 3 miles after that, I come around a big turn, and then I see it, WOW, at least 10 State Troopers, lined up waiting for speeders. Where did they come from, how did they know? That was 3-4 miles back!!! Ahhhhhhh, technology!!! The trooper walks up to my window, and says do you know how fast you were going? I said, in my best stupid New York voice, "Well, not exactly officer, but I am sure you do! He said, well I do now, cause the pilot that we have in the air clocked you at almost 90mph. Pilot??? I got caught speeding by a pilot???? Wow, they zoomed in on my little NY Yankees license plate from 1000 feet in the air and pulled a Chloe-(24) on me. The damage was $185.50. I suppose it could be worse, if they would have clocked me at 115. I just love technology, don't you. Ahhhhh, Lexus, the passionate pursuit of speeding violations! This is not a plea for sympathy, I deserved what I got. I am just reporting the news!!!! :loony:
You know...I have always seen those signs along the highway that read "state police aircraft used in speed enforcement." Though I have NEVER heard of anyone getting nabbed by it! 115MPH, very nice Steve. I like your style...lol
Its not just guys, trust me. I drive 90 most days. BUT I can honestly say I've never gotten a ticket in my life... God I love being a woman. ;-) ~*Ash*~
You didn't notice the white bars painted across the road every 100 yards or so? Those are for aircraft speed traps. They time your travel between 2 of them and then calculate your speed. I've never been caught in Florida as whenever I'm in Fl I speed the stealthy way. I drive Grandpa's Grand Marquis (with Florida plates), and keep up with traffic on I-95. I usually end up going 80 or 85. I know here in Virginia as soon as you enter the state there are signs that say "Speed enforced by aircraft" but I've never heared of anyone getting caught by air locally. -Jay
I give you a BIG thumb's up anyways!!! At least you made it count going that fast!!! You are my hero!!!:browani:
Awwwww, you are only saying that cause your my little brother. Wait till Mom hears about this ticket*****WOW!!!!!!!
So THATS what those markings are for. I never knew what the hell those were for. They have them set up all over I-90 (NYS Thruway). Very interesting. I, also on the little stretch of highway that I take to get to classes sometimes will floor my new little SUB just to see how fast I can go before it gets unsafe. I've determined that 110 is the limit for my Mitsubishi Outlander on a windy day before it gets dangerous! (BTW...my only ticket so far has been rolling through a stop sign...i've been very lucky otherwise)
WOW, where were you when I needed to know that Jay? I am driving home, and I see the lines now, right where I got stopped. Never knew that!!!
Wow, I've never actually heard of anyone actually getting an air ticket. When you leave the State of Illinois headed north on I-90/I-39, as soon as you get into Wisconsin there's a line of troopers to pull over speeders. They're completely impervious to persuasion, too -- I know a LOT of people who have got bad speeding tickets. And in Wisconsin, if you're driving on an out-of-state licence, they can force you to pay immediately! I went up to San Jose over President's Day in my little Civic Hybrid -- it got up to 102 mph on I-5 before it got the DTs... my BMW used to have a governor kick in at 119 mph that cut off the gas flow to slow down the car. Of course, I never routed around the governor, that would be illegal and dangerous.
ROTFLMAO. Sorry, I got to laugh on that one. In my young and reckless youth I once took my "Family Truckster" 1980 Pontiac Bonneville Safari station wagon to about 120. It was a nice heavy car with a big block V-8 so it hardly felt like you were going fast. The fastest I've driven my current daily driver, the 98 GMC Sierra K1500 is about 100, and that was nice and solid at speed as well. -Jay
Wirelessly posted (Treo 750V: Palm750/v0000 Mozilla/4.0) I now have a new appreciation for Nascar....cause when I was driving at 115 mph, I thought, Wow, these guys are up over 200 mph and passing one another. That is crazy!!!
Wow. Makes me glad to know that. What part of the FL turnpike were you on? Just remember that now that it's getting warmer the cops are out more. Yesterday when I was driving home I saw probably 6 motorcycle cops pulling people over in speed traps. Speaking of firsts, I had a big first on Tuesday. The first time I saw up close the results of a motorcycle/auto accident. My wife and I were the first two people in uniform (both Air Force) on the scene. We did what we could but the end result was that the biker didn't make it. He was DATS (dead at the scene), died while I was talking to the 911 operator.
I've never known anyone to get an "air ticket" before either. I'm not familiar with that....I'm not sure that can hold up in court. The officer writing the ticket did not actually see the violation. I dont know what the technical laws are for air clocking. Steve...did the ticket have 2 names on it? I know when people take me to court for speeding tickets, the state's attorney always asks me if I was on patrol on the date and time listed on the ticket, since my name is on it. They ask me about my radar unit, calibration, and if I was sure that I clocked the defendants car....they ask if the car was the only one on the road or if there were other cars around. On your ticket, the trooper that signed it did not see your vehicle nor did he clock you, so how can he sign to it? Like I said, I don't know much about running air traffic, or the laws of Florida, but it seems like an air ticket would be easy to beat in court.
xikle...I too have been to a scene with blood and death. Not too pretty...and it will stick with you for a few days. Yeah....warmer weather is coming....more cycle crashes too They have those clocking markers on the highways up here....although they don't run air patrol that often.
I feel like the cost of fuel to run the helicopter or whatever they use would outweigh the income from the ticket itself. But what do I know...
True. I know it's going to stick for a while since this was my first fatal accident and I haven't had any specific training on how to deal with it. But when I was at the scene my military training kicked in. I did what I could but he wasn't wearing any protective gear, and speeding during rush hour. As near as I can tell the car he hit turned in front of him or he didn't see it and he paid the price. ----- I think if FL that both officers have to sign the ticket since they worked as a team but I'm not sure. Don't quote me on it since I don't work with laws in my job. I can attest that it is the luck of the draw though with tickets. In all the time I've been driving I've only got 2, and there have been a bunch of times that I thought I would get pulled over but I didn't. I do know the joys of driving really fast though, it's fun to do when the road is open.
Well, you did say that there were about 10 patrol cars around the bend. If they put the chopper in the air and he called out every speeder in that area of highway for 2 hours and those 10 crusiers chased them down it sounds very profitable to me. -Jay
Luckily I didn't see many bad accidents in my years of driving ambulances as we were a rural squad and rarely ran highway calls. Most of our calls were medical emergencies. I can remember once we ran a call on a bad corner and it was one of our members in the accident. I never made it to the hospital so fast. About 2 minutes into transport he started showing signs of a serious head injury. I said to myself that Arnie wasn't dying in my truck. I was driving a brand new 1991 Type III Ford E350XL diesel ambulance. I got on I-95 and did not take the accelerator off the floor till I got to the hospital exit. I don't know how fast I was going as the speedometer only went to 85, but I had pushed it so hard that the engine was almost ready to overheat as I exited the highway. What would have been normally a 40 minute trip was made in about 25 minutes. -Jay
I'd like to thank The Acadamy, along with my parents, wife, and the Florida State Police, without whom, I would not be here to accept this honor! Thank you WA..llywood!!!!!
They are also used be officers on the ground, especially here in PA where the local police are not allowed to use radar/laser - only the state troopers use that.
1995 Pontiac Trans Am convertible, Edelbrock shorty headers, custom cold air intake, no cat, custom exhaust, 3.73 gears, aluminum drive shaft, other mods....speedometer said 155+, I had it past 155, so with my gears and speedo error, I would guess about 145 or so. I passed a car like it was going the other way. Stupid? Very. Fun? Hell yes.
No, it is my first ticket, and I am 50 years old, driving since I was 17. My car is a 2007 Lexus ES350!!!
