    Thanks all.

I found this site after we learned that calls made on our Sprint plan to and from Fairbanks AK are now charged as roaming, whereas last summer this was not the case. The cost is considerable: $0.94 per minute for incoming or outgoing calls. We do have an old plan, but till this year it wasn't a problem. I've posted something about this issue on a thread about service in Alaska. If anybody else has any suggestions, I'll welcome them.

I'll have to look around to see what else here interests me. I'm pretty lo-tech about wireless: I just want a phone, have no interest in an ear ____roach (my term for those blue-tooth doodads) and I do my best to avoid being a party to phone conversations where one participant is driving. I know I'm the exception and don't try to change my mind.

Hey all! Thanks for this site, and all your participation. I'm mainly here to find out how to get my Verizon Moto w755 to work with Moto Phone Tools, and eventually to mod it. (apparently it requires me to edit the Detect.inf)
I also enjoy talking with intelligent people!
@little cat5: I am fluent in Mandarin Chinese so fell free to PM me if you can't figure out how to say something.

    Hello All!

I think my carrier is a little under-represented here

Looking forward to debating, learning, and hopefully answering a few questions myself...

    Have a good one!

You're correct...the Appalachian Wireless licensed territory consists of eastern KY and some of the VA, WVA, and TN border counties.

The coverage, especially in KY and VA is far superior to the GSM competition and there's a lengthy list of CDMA roaming partners :)

So does the Appalachian Wireless plan on continuing it coverage to other states or is it just for that area? Are they all their own company or a spin off of some other wireless company?

For now, they plan to continue improving service inside the current home area. Some new things are in the works but I'm probably not at liberty to say much more yet :)

If the opportunity to expand into contiguous areas comes about, then that's something they'll certainly look at.

Appalachian Wireless is an independent, wholly-owned subsidiary of a company named East Kentucky Network, which is a partnership of five landline providers that operate inside the home area. Through EKN, they also own and operate their own Fiber ring that covers a significant portion of the state.

    HELLO to everyone,

I located this site quite by accident. Looks like there's a lot of well informed folks here, so I'll jump right in.

I was attempting to research if I could use an existing phone from my Nextel account on a different carrier (Verizon).

I am an independent catastrophe adjuster and spend most of my time in the field helping clients, inspecting their damages and getting them money for their losses ASAP.

Most of the time the conditions I work under are somewhat less than ideal, (8 months working Katrina losses for several different carriers).

My question is I dearly love my i580, there’s nothing else I’ve found like it for ruggedness and durability; I’ve dropped mine off 1 and 2 story roofs several times, and it just keeps working.

Do any of you “techie folks” know if I would be able to use my i580 on a Verizon account, if I can unlock the phone??

Sure hope someone can help. Hello again to everyone, and thanks for listening.

Nextel iDEN phones are completely incompatible with Verizon's CDMA network.

Welcome, roofranger. No way, sorry. Two different digital modulations (like the difference between two analog systems, Amplitude Modulation and Frequency Modulation, AM and FM) are involved. They are known as iDEN (only made by Motorola) and CDMA. You could bring your Sprint phone to Verizon, but not a NexTel. You could bring it to SouthernLINC in the Southeast (coverage map).

Do stay, there's all manner of interesting stuff here.
