Someone started a thread in the Central US forum saying that Toledo, OH has one of the most competitive wireless markets in that part of the US.

I thought it was a good idea and wondered what people thought was the most competitive wireless market in the Southern part of the country. By competitive I mean the greatest number of wireless companies fighting it out for consumer $$$$.

I'll step right up and nominate ATLANTA.
I think it might be the most competitive in the entire country.
They have ALL of the big six(AT&T, Cingular, Verizon, VoiceStream, Nextel, Sprint PCS) plus a new unlimited plan carrier MetroPCS AND one of the only other companies using iDEN like Nextel, Southern LINC!!

Are there any other markets with this kind of wireless competition?!!!

I know of a website that lists carriers that provide coverage for cities in the southeast US. According to this chart some areas of the south have as many as 9 wireless provider's to choose from!

Here in Memphis, we're right up there with the big cities concerning wireless competition:

    1-Sprint
    2-Verizon
    3-Voice Stream
    4-Nextel
    5-Cingular
    6-SunCom (AT&T)
    7-Cellular South
    8-Cricket

That's a whole lot of carriers for a city nowhere near as large as Atlanta or Los Angeles.

Not to be rude or anything, but Cleveland is not in the "South." I'm up here near Toledo, and yes the cell phone service is intense. I know at least one person for each provider. Alltel sucks here; Verizon somewhat sucks here, Nextel has some static problems, Cricket (our unlimited wireless provider) has "all circuits are busy problems, alot; I know people with and without problems with Sprint PCS; AT&T is full of static, like it were analog or something (analog sounds better actually); I have no problems with my Voicestream.

Does "PCS#1" mean that that company listed is the #1 company for that area?

I have to agree with Bird, that Atlanta is the most competitive market and right behind Atlanta, I would have to say Dallas would be second.

everybody seems to be getting into this so i will nominate my area.

    Charlotte, NC

    1. Cingular
    2. Verizon
    3. Alltel
    4. Sprint PCS
    5. At&t
    6. Nextel
    7. Cricket (although they shouldn't really count as competition b/c they don't really market for the same type of user)

Maybe in Atlanta but let Voice stream stray off I20, and it's not worth a flip!

I agree -- VS has excellent coverage in most parts of metro Atlanta, but has some issues with the east
and west burbs; AT&T is slightly worse than VS. (Then again, Verizon had analog-only cells
in much of south Fulton for the longest time; I can remember always hitting the same tower and falling
    to analog around Union City...)

Then there's Metro PCS, who doesn't cover Douglas/Rockdale/Fayette/etc. counties at all yet... [IMG]

Little bitty old Tyler Texas has
    1. Alltel
    2. AT&T
    3. Cingular
    4. Verizon
    5. Nextel
    6. Voicestream
    7. Cell-1
    8. Centurytel
    9. People's Cellular (7, 8, and 9 depend on what rural area around tyler you are in)
    10. Sprint POS
    Then there are the resellers
    11. Teletouch....

I believe there are more but I cannot think of them now..
We are just in a really wierd area kind of stuck in the 'golden triangle' between DFW, Houston, Austin, and Shreveport.. It seems all of the carriers from the bigger cities have some stake in this in-between area...

Tyler doesn't really have 11 carriers in the same area (county, etc)...

As far as I can tell, the I-10 corridor between Bay St. Louis, MS and Pensacola has the most carriers of anywhere in the US. At the other extreme, I know of two counties in east TN (Polk and Meigs) that are served only by Verizon, and a third (Johnson) appears to have one normal carrier (ALLTEL) and an outfit that doesn't really sell local service, but exists mainly to "gouge" roamers.

(BTW, the web site TNDan21 mentions is mine.)
