lol budney yes the keyboard and no flashing red light drove me away. :D

Seriously though I need to seemlessly do a two way synch with all the factions of Outlook, so until that happens Android will be off limit for me. :(

The salesperson actually told me that the iPhone was the only one that did it, say what???

My Eris has a trackball that I can have flash with notifications. I'm not sure if the color changes, though...

Hopefully Google will work on the syncing with Outlook, as I think it would benefit them with getting more Android devices in corporate hands.

The lack of LED light for notification is a turn off for a lot of people. Hopefully someone over at XDA will find away to light up the buttons for notification purposes.

My myTouch has the trackball too, along with a multi-color LED for notifications. But the Vibrant and Captivate lack any type light notification.

I think that Google has a lot of Outlook working via ActiveSync - the major piece being tasks/memos - but I think Charlyee said she isn't using ActiveSync.

Here is a pretty good link comparing ActiveSync across different platforms.

So if Charlyee wants to seriously consider an Android, maybe she has to look at models other than those...

Thanks for the link, I haven't used Outlook since moving to Android. And just use my phone to update my Google account info. Hopefully AT&T will expand their Android selection soon. That way Charlyee with have some more choices like T-Mobile with the upcomming HTC Vision and Motorola Charm. :)

our3rotts, thanks for the link. :)

I do or atleast used to use Active Sync with my WM phones, and liked it. However, I cannot use OTA Exchange Active Sync (which is what the Android OS supports)our IT blocks it. It needs to be a Desktop USB Active Sync unless it a Blackberry or iPhone.

Our IT was like that - but now they "turn on" access to OTA on an individual basis. Essentially, you have to agree to use a password on your phone and if you lose your phone, you will log into web outlook and send a "wipe" command to the phone so that no one else can get work data from it.

Nationwide we have over 8,000 employees or something like that - and since they allowed it in August 2009, 875 people have signed up for ActiveSync (200 of those before Feb 2010).

    A follow up: :)

I got the Captivate on August 6th, played with it a lot, changed my mind 5 times, and finally decided to return it and stay with my BB 9700 for the following reasons. Please note these are my personal reasons and what is important to me and also most of them are.were not deal breakers on their own merit, except the GPS issue and the signal strength.

    What I liked:

    1. The gorgeous screen - size and resolution.
    2. The browser speed.
    3. The ability to root the device and get rid of the at&t bloatware.

    What I did not like:

    1. The known AGPS problem, at the best of times it would be at 50 meter, none of the posted workarounds worked for my device - Samsung has promised a fix by September.
    2. The call quality sounds a bit muffled.
    3. The reception is okay but not as good as my BB.
    4. To get the desktop Outlook sync I have to buy additional software (companionlink) for $40.
    5. The screen is very hard to see in sunlight.
    6. The battery life is miserable, although I do not expect any other device to match the battery life of a BB.
    7. No way to combine G-Mail and E-Mail folder resulting in the same mail coming into both folders with a time lag.
    8. No Visual Voice Mail? Atleast I didn't find it.
    9. No indicator light.
    10. No BBM, which was great for me from overseas.

I did enjoy the Android OS and looking forward to trying a different device in the future.

OK, Charlyee, very good list. Of your dislikes, let me make a few comments from my own viewpoint. For others, YMMV:
    1. I use the GPS little enough that I can wait till September for the fix,
    2. & 3. Both could be dealbreakers. I use my phone a lot in situations where my not understanding someone could have consequences. Clarity is important. And I live in an area where coverage is great, but my home is toward the top of a hill away from the towers with lots of brick duplexes between me & signal sources. I've done well at improving reception with each phone upgrade. Regressing is not part of my plan. ;)
    4. Outlook sync is a non-issue for me. There are more secure PC email programs. And, since I'm on WM 6.5 at the moment, I really like being able to sync both to MyPhone & Google..
    5. Most color screens have issues with being seen easily in sunlight. Monochrome is best for that, but most people don't want to go back to that. :p High contrast themes usually help, as do adjusting darkness & contrast..
    6. If you hit enough Android sites that discuss the Captivate, there's a recurring statement -- "Turn down your screen!". The screen uses 65-85% of your battery drain. Turning it down, using the screensaver, etc. will help lots.
    7. Is that the way BB does it? If so, is there a way to force each account into it's own folder, without mixing? If not, that's a huge negative for me for BB. Over the years, I've created an increasing number of email addresses for varying reasons, including 6 on my own domain. Since my pc email program puts everything in one inbox, As I now eliminate accounts, I now have the joyous task of using webmail apps at my host to go into the various accounts to unsubscribe from things because enough lists address their emails to the list without referencing the receiving account. I like separate inboxes.
    8. & 10. I never tried either, so I don't know if there's a potential issue or not.
    9. I like having the indicator light for messaging, but the main thing I might require it for is low battery indicator.

Thanks kraski, let me make a few comments on your comments.:D

    1. I use the GPS mostly for fun and I can wait until September as well, however my concerns is that there maybe a underlying hardware issue to this that a firmware update will not be enough.

    2. Don't misunderstand me, the voice quality is not garbled it is just unnatural, like it has too much base or something. I think this is a Samsung thing, my Blackjack was the same way as was my A670.

    3. The average reception issue probably is the highest for me as well.

    5. The sunlight issue is more than that, it is an unfortunate negative of that gorgeous AMOLED screen, if you are serious about this device I suggest you take it out into the sunlight to see if it bothers you in any way.

    6. The brightness of my screen was turned way down, the first advice I got from my Android toting friends. This is not a deal breaker for me, I had all kinds of extended battery and chargers for the Treo 750 and was thrilled when the Treo Pro, could squeak by a whole day. I just had to get back to charging it every night.

    7. The BB has separate folders for all E-Mail accounts with the option to combine them all into one inbox if you prefer. The problem with the Captivate is that the messages from my gmail come instantly into the gmail folder and another 1-3 minutes later the same message comes to my E-Mail inbox even though I have read and deleted the message.

    8. VVM has me spoilt, nothing beats knowing who left the voicemail before starting to listen to it, this is specially helpful from overseas.

    9. Well there is no light on the Captivate to blink, whatever the reason you want it for. There are some apps being worked on to flash the screen but that is not the same.

Have said all of that I do miss the Captivate, I still want to run out and get it and give it another try every so often.

Btw, Big Blue managed to change my messaging unlimited to texting unlimited in the process of switching back and forth between the 9700 and the Captivate, thus blocking my mms capability.

Keep us posted on what you decide.

    2. Still, that's not the way it ought to be. Any difference using BT?

    3. This one's probably pushing me in the direction of the Torch.

    5. My Tilt2 isn't real good in direct sun, either. I take it your 9700 is better. I guess that's another good reason to check out the Torch. ;)

Sorry to hear they messed up your messaging plan. That's one of the reasons why I want to be sure of which direction I want to go in.

One other thing you mentioned. Battery life. I'm like you -- I had an extended & a spare battery for my last two phones. The full day, up to three for a BB is enticing. As much as I love to customize & tinker with my phone, just knowing that it's there when needed is HUGE. There are people who rely on that fact.

I didn't try it with BT, wanted to return it before I broke it. :D

The 9700 is real good in sunlight or any other bright light, it adjusts automatically.

From what I hearing from my BBM friends, the 9800 does not have as good a battery life as the 9700 but still much better than other SmartPhones.

Good luck with your choice. :)

And my choice is... [drumroll] an Android Torch!!! But they don't make one of those, do they?
