After changing my phone number, I received a text message four days later from someone that was not given the new phone number.

Is it possible that it was sent to the old number four days ago and I just now got notified that it was sent? However, the time stamp says it was sent today, not four days ago.

What does T-Mobile technical support say? It sounds to me like a system glitch, but then again, I don't know this as a fact, just a guess.

Apparently your situation is an unusual one no one here really knows much about. With the all the complexity involved in making cell service work, it's a surprise these glitches don't happen more often.

So the question you asked in your second post may be the case with this matter.

    T-Mobile customer support said:
"Sometimes it can take the network a little while to completely update but it shouldn't take four days though." He also said that If it's a network issue, things can be a little flaky.

He asked me to send a text message to the old number and see if it gets sent to the new number. I tried that and it did not arrive at the new number.

From experience, whenever you send a message to the old number it SHOULD NEVER arrive at the new number.

If possibly (this is a far fetched answer), you were sent the message during the time that the switch was updating your account to the new number, the text being sent to the old number would stay in the network queue for approximately 3 days before being deleted. Possibly, it found your new number and sent it to you at the last possible re-try moment...This is highly far fetched but doesn't sound completely impossible....it IS technology we are talking about :loony:

Thanks for that information. The send date of the text message showed the date I received it, which was four days after the number was changed. Would that be the case in the scenario you described? I tried sending a text message from another phone and it shows the exact date and time it was sent.

Again, it's possible. I have had several texts delayed and my phone displaying the time the message was received, which was undoubtedly NOT when it was sent (confused?). That being said, I've also gotten texts which were not delayed and the time displayed was the actual time the message was received. This has been across several different handsets and several different network conditions. At the end of the day (and this is going to sound like a canned message) but a cellular network's contact with your phone can be delayed for SEVERAL reasons, some having NOTHING to do with number changes or handsets used. Have you had any other issues with texts, such as this one or was it a single instance situation?

I havn't noticed any more instances. Also, I may have had the phone turned off most of the time during that four day period but I am not sure. If it was turned off most of the time, I was thinking that may have something to do with the delay. On the day the text message was received though, the phone had probably been on around 1-2 hours before it was received.

    Wirelessly posted (BlackBerry8120/4.5.0.176 Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.1 VendorID/100)

If your phone was off, this would have something to do with the delay in it being received by your phone as the network cannot contact your phone if its off, hence the 3 day queue time. That being said, if the phone was on for 1 to 2 before the message was relayed to your phone, it would suggest that it was stuck in limbo.
