I just want to make sure I didn't miss something, a friend of my that works at Prudential sent me an email, that their Corp. people have sent to them. The email said in 12 days, telemarketers will be allowed to call Cell Phone #'s & to sign up on the "Do Not Call" list to prevent it. I advised her, I haven't heard anything about this & she should ask to see any documentation that proves this. Has anyone heard anything, that I may have missed?
I have not heard anything about that, but all of our cell phone numbers and home phone number are already on the National Do Not Call list.
I was able to sign up all my wireless and wired numbers on the Do Not Call list when it first came out. I have not heard that telemarketers have been given permission to call wireless phones nor that there is going to be a directory of wireless phone numbers. AFAIK, you still have to pay to have a wireless number listed in a phonebook or directory. I did get calls on my Alltel phone from political parties during the election in November but those are exempt from the DNC list and it was a ported landline number, which makes sense. My wife, myself, my brother, my mom nor my dad received any calls on our T-Mobile numbers.
The FTC has the following information posted on their site: [*]Cell Phones You may place your personal cell phone number on the National Do Not Call Registry. The registry has accepted cell phone numbers since it opened for registrations in June 2003. There is no deadline to register a home or cell phone number on the Registry. You may have received an email telling you that your cell phone is about to be assaulted by telemarketing calls as a result of a new cell phone number database; however, that is not the case. Federal Communications Commission regulations prohibit telemarketers from using automated dialers to call cell phone numbers.
Wirelessly posted (Walkguru's: LG-CU500 Obigo/WAP2.0 Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.1 UP.Link/6.3.0.0.0) Like ever one else i have not heard a thing.
This thing keeps coming back. I think it all started when they tried to put together a wireless 411 directory or somesuch, which was never intended to be available to get numbers off of anyway. But that project got killed before completion anyway. The rumor was so persistent the last time around, even the local newspaper got it wrong -- they had an article saying "get on the do not call list or else" One final note -- the Do Not Call registry is not forever, I think it's for a period of five years or so, so people who have registered in the beginning will need to renew within a couple of years.
Well being it was from Pru I was concerned if they knew something ahead of time, but really didn't think it would have slipped by quietly like that. I finally got a reply Email from her & it was a fake email that someone got & spread it thru their company. (nice huh?) I appreciate everyones response. At least I have been registered since 03 for the Do Not Call list. (I did see something in the email that I remember & believe is true that you have to sign up every 5 years)
Yes, I just ran my number through their "Verify" link and it says it'll expire in August 2001 (just wanted to be sure).
I've been aware of this. I signed up the Wife's & My Cell#'s the day the DNC Registry was available, & consequently, there have been no Telemarketer calls!!! Brilliant!!!:lmao:
This is old news. This was something the Retardicans in congress tried to get passed last summer, but it didn't pass. Thank goodness.
<sigh> why do corporate people circulate this cråp?! Of all people they should at least know enough to check out a rumor collection site such as snopes.com http://www.snopes.com/politics/business/cell411.asp As it says every January and June this rumor rears its ugly head.
Even San Jose Mercury News printed it last year -- wouldn't media people (and I don't mean National Enquirer) know to check first, too?
No, no it wasn't the Republicans, some people will blame anything and everything on people based on nothing. This is a complete farce. The email is just a one of those ridiculous emails people create to see how far it goes. It is usually a variation on this, 5 days 12 days. Tells you to call 888 322 1121? i think. Just delete it and tell everyone it is crap. Here is the proof..... http://urbanlegends.about.com/od/business/a/cell_directory.htm Haha, don't trust the media, they usually don't know any better then anyone else and they just report negative things and trump up non-stories........just take it with a grain of salt and look up a little if you are interested in it.
Evidently it appears not. It's not the first time a "well respected" publication has been duped. Usually the reason why they're duped is that they're too lazy to check out a story fully. Besides, causing angst by rumor is what the media's all about It sells papers.
I'll grant you that Someone read it in the paper and sent an email to the whole company, starting a panic. Don't know what would come out of it had it not been for snopes
I believe the only time your cell can get a marketing call is if you used it in a way that sets up a "business relationship" with a company. Unfortunately, I found out the hard way that a business relationship consists of putting your cell number on a rebate form. since I don't have a landline, I had to give my cell # to the local newspaper to set up a subscription. When I cancelled, they started calling to try to lure me back. But remember, all you have to do is tell the calling party to remove you from the list, and by law, they have to. Don't fall for the crap they feed you about "it may take 30 days, and you may get another call before then". 30 days to delete me from a database? You gotta be kidding.
Which is why everyone should have a Private Line www.privatephone.com number to give out. Numbers are available for most areas of the country in your area code and usually down to the city level. I live in the Seattle, Washington area and I was assigned 206-855-6670. If you receive a message it sends an email address you specify and can send a text message to your mobile as well. The email and text notification will even tell you the number that left the call (CID) if the CID was present when the message was taken. If you access your messages via the web page it also shows who left the message and at what time. And best of all the service is free! It's run by netzero. In Illinois they have numbers in 217, 224, 309, 312, 618, 630, 708, 773, 815 and 847.
