Article From the BBC: BBC NEWS | South Asia | Taleban issue mobile phone threat The Taleban have threatened to blow up telephone masts across Afghanistan unless mobile phone companies agree to switch off their signals at night. They say that US and other foreign troops are using the signals to track down insurgents. The Taleban have warned the masts and offices of the mobile companies will be destroyed unless their demands are met. Mobiles were introduced after the Taleban fell in 2001 and are now the most popular way of communicating. ''If those companies do not stop their signal within three days, the Taleban will target their towers and their offices," Taleban spokesman Zabiullah Mujaheed said. The Taleban say that Afghanistan's four mobile phone companies should stop operating between 1700 local time and 0300 the following morning. Militants have threatened the companies in the past, accusing them of colluding with the US and other forces. But communication experts say the US military uses satellites to pick up mobile signals and does not need the help of the phone companies anyway.
Re: Taleban issue mobile phone threat If some terrorist is that concerned that he'll get caught he should turn his phone off and remove the battery... Anyway, even if the towers are shut off they can still be tracked if they leave the phones on...
Re: Taleban issue mobile phone threat ...the article didn't mention it, but he also wanted unlimited texting and free nights and weekend minutes.
Wirelessly posted (Opera/9.50 (J2ME/MIDP; Opera Mini/4.0.9800/272; U; en)) I also heard that they demanded that they should qualify for weekly discounted upgrades from the carriers. For some odd reason, their phones keep blowing up. ; )
Wirelessly posted (Walkguru's: LG-CU515/V1.0c Obigo/Q05A Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.1 UP.Link/6.3.1.17.06.3.1.17.0) cluster er charly foxtrot is right.
Re: Taleban issue mobile phone threat Thats right Dan. We are past Charlie Foxtrot, going through SNAFU, but at least we are not at FUBAR yet.
Attn: Mr. MORON terrorist: If you blow up the towers YOU will not be able to make any calls to your nut job friends during the day either. You may want to rethink your jihad against the cell phone carriers. PS: Look up. Is that a Predator? Bye!
LOL! Maybe Nokia and Kyocera should send their defective batteries (the ones that explode) to the Taliban for free. They'll be doing the world a favor.
Offer the Taliban members unlimited calling and texting, during their "suggested" network off time from 1700 to 0300 local time. Or, offer to disable their phones alone during the "quiet period" each night.. COtech
Just a follow up, looks like they gave in to the Taliban as they have been turning off towers at night: BBC NEWS | South Asia | Taleban threat hits Afghan phones "Ten mobile phone masts were attacked in recent weeks, the latest on Tuesday night, the Afghan government says."
Stay on topic people...discuss the issue at hand without allowing yourself to be too personally involved and without making off-color remarks.
Hey Matt, I don't remember exactly what I said so I could be forgetting something. But calling terrorist third world and archaic is off color and deserved the post to be deleted???? I'm confused on why it needs to be deleted. Oh I also said "just wipe them out" but still nothing else really objectionable......either way I had no plans of continuing to post in this thread.
Thank you for explaining it to me. PS to all...sorry if I offending anyone about the rights thing.....
