Because of my irritation with Git It Now, I spent quite a bit of time just prior to Chirstmas getting my T720 to work with the WAP tunnel approach. In addition to wanting to save money, solving little challenges like this intrigue me intellectually. My main reason for wanting web access was to be able to check my email from the phone, which I need only to do for about two weeks a year on vacation.

Because I don't talk on the phone that much, I have a 150 minute a month call pack, which I hadn't exceeded in the two years prior to the T720. You can imagine my surprise when I got my latest bill: $100 in extra-minute charges for data access! I ran this up trying to avoid a $3 per month fee for SodaPOP Mail, which would have met my needs just fine.

So, the point of this is just a reminder that sometimes people (me) can miss the forest for the trees...

You can get POP3 email sent to you in SMS text messages. Maybe that can help you out.

Just a note, SodaPop requires airtime to check, read and reply to email.

So I dont know if that would have helped your airtime overage problem.

BTW: I found SodaPOP would fail to connect about 75% of the time, thus
wasting my time and at least 1 minute airtime.

    Couple questions -

You used the 150 minutes PLUS $100 worth more?

Were any of those minutes during night time and weekends?

I can't imagine that it took you a couple hours to get waptunnel working and to check email. It only took me a couple minutes with a weak signal that kept going out (and I did it all during the N/W hours).

Yeah, I sure did. Until I learned of the fix, whenever I would try to logon to WAP Tunnel, I would get a Sending-Connecting loop that never actually connected to the web. It connected to Verizons' network though, and even though each cycle was only on the network for a second or so, I got charged an minimum of one minute each time. Soooooooooo, it was easy to run up 239 extra "minutes." Ouch. A word to the wise (unlike me.) Also, I'm on a Single Rate plan, so nights and weekends are the same to me.

Thanks for clearing that up for me. I've only been playing around with the web during the N/W times, so I shouldn't be charged at all.

One strange thing did happen to me though...somehow the phone changed my primary connection back to VZW. When I went straight to the browser, it tried to connect to them. Of course it didn't work, but that was unexpected. Hasn't happened since.

ylexot, when you say "I've only been playing around with the web during the N/W times, so I shouldn't be charged at all" does that mean that you're assuming you won't be charged or have you checked you statement and indeed know that you aren't going to be charged? i'm asking because through this forum i've just learned about the waptunnel to access yahoo but i get conflicting statements from people as to whether using data uses up any peak minutes. some have said that if you use it during peak times then of course it will and if you use it during free night and weekend periods you won't. but others have said it doesn't matter when you connect, you'll still be using peak minutes.

As someone who has used the web browser on his phone to check AOL mail, data airtime usage is treated just like voice. Airtime usage is based upon when the conection begins, not on the type of call data vs voice. I know there have been conflicting reports, but I know this is how I have been charged.

    Hope this helps,

    Mike

thanks mike, so if connected during 9:01pm and 5:59am and weekends then i shouldn't eat up my peak minutes. i'll keep an eye on my bill, thanks again
