Could an iPhone 5s, model A1533 purchased from T-Mobile be later activated for Verizon, Sprint, or AT&T, if one decided to switch services?

A Tmobile or AT&T 5S will not work on Verizon or Sprint.

A full price (unlocked, $650-$850) from Verizon seems to work on AT&T, based on one forum member here (http://forums.wirelessadvisor.com/apple-iphone/83226-mini-review-of-apple-iphone-5s.html#post575835).

A Tmobile USA will work on AT&T, but again, it must be unlocked by Tmobile and you'll pay the full price.

Any subsidized phone model purchased will be limited to the US carrier until the contract is paid off. But a Tmobile phone will never work with Verizon or Sprint.

Best bet is to buy from the Apple store or online from Apple

Thanks. If the Verizon iPhone can work on AT&T, it seems it should also work with T-Mobile - yes or no? (because both use GSM)

Yes, it should based on the poster...I have no direct experience. But once again you need to purchase the full price at Verizon. You may wish check with Verizon and Tmobile. Generally, the Verizon version of the 5S has unlocked GSM bands for use overseas. For Tmobile, you will be bringing your own device.

HOWEVER, it is totally up to Tmobile whether they will allow your phone or not. Nothing to do with technology. I just now entered my Unlocked 5S IMEI into Tmobile's bring your own phone site...and it did not work. Nor do they say that a 5S will work.

I'd be really careful here, and google around for some other advice. I'm sure that a pay as you go SIM will work in my 5S...but getting a post paid plan, idk. I'd walk into a tmobile store and ask.

Also wondering about this small detail: According to the Verizon person I was online-chatting with yesterday, there is no difference between an iPhone 5s purchased at full price and one purchased for ~$200 with the required 24 mo. contract - either way, this person stated, it would be usable internationally and could also be ported to another carrier. It is also possible this person was wrong. I restated the question several times and repeated the answer back to him/her, and each time it was confirmed about no difference in iPhone 5s purchased one way or the other.

If you pay off the phone via cash or 24 months, yes, that will be true.

Now I remember something else the rep. stated about that: With the 24 mo. plan, it becomes "available for porting" (my phrase) after 6 months.

Correct. My Verizon iPhone 5S works with my AT&T and T-Mobile service. Just put my Sim in and was good to go.

Verizon's 5S is unlocked out of the box regardless if one pays full retail, contract subsidy, or doing the Edge program. This means that there is no wait time to use it with another carrier SIM card. With AT&T and T-Mobiles 5S one would have to pay full retail price up front in order for it to be unlocked out of the box and used with another carrier. One exception to this is that unlike the Verizon 5S, both the AT&T and T-Mobile 5S can not be used with Verizon. Not because it wouldn't work, but because Verizon will not activate it for use with the CDMA side of their network.

Hope this clears things up. :) I've been using the Verizon 5S on AT&T and T-Mobile for a few months now and everything has been perfect with it so far. I have even tried it with Verizon earlier this month just to test out their service in my area, however, Verizon is horrible in the Philly area due to their lack of towers so I canceled my service with them and now primarily use my 5S with AT&T.

So I placed my pay as you got Tmobile sim into my 5S and indeed it did find the carrier and worked.

It should. But for some reason the tmobile site is not including 5S, only the 5, nor would check my imei number correctly.

I guess they ant to sell you the 5S instead?

I believe the reason why it won't show your 5S is because it is the unlocked version and the IMEI number for it might not be in T-Mobiles data base. I know that my Verizon 5S will not show up in my AT&T or T-Mobile account, but did show up in the Verizon account that I had for a week. With AT&T the image and name of my device is blank.
