I was hoping the forum could help me with coverage of T-Mobile in Northern NJ. I live in Wayne and have been happy with Verizon on my Treo, but the Treo getting a bit bulky for me. I still need a smartphone but have seen lukewarm reviews of Motorola's Q and very good things for the T-Mobile Dash. If the coverage is good in NJ (and the NE when I travel) in general I would switch to T-Mobile, looking for some input. Dropped calls and network speed for emails would be important to me; video and and web not so important.
There coverage all depends on which area's of NJ you would be using it most. T-Mobile does have street level coverage maps that are pretty accurate & could help you figure out for what area's you travel how coverage will be. It seems the further west & south you go in NJ the poorer coverage gets at least according to the maps. I have heard from friends that T-Mobile is most of the eastern part of the state have decent coverage, but for the best you want to go with Verizon or Cingular. Here is a link to their coverage map: http://www.t-mobile.com/coverage/
I would not reccomend switching from VZW to T-Mobile here. You would be going from the carrier that has "the Best" coverage to the carrier considered by most to have the "worst" overall coverage (as "general" statements). T-mobile would be fine if, as Fire14 suggested, you check their street level maps & only need your fone to work in the very specific defined places you look up. If you "generally" travel from Western NJ to NYC/LI, to Rockland To Atlantic city, both in & away from major roads ... You WILL notice a degrade in service with T-Mobile ... CINGULAR would be a much closer match to VZW's overall coverage if you are planning to switch ....
I worked in Wayne a couple of years ago and Verizon worked well for me. T-Mobile has done alot of building since then, so they have likely improved quite a bit. NJ is pretty rough for all the carriers because of the high traffic and tough zoning. There has been alot of discussions here about the NJ NIMBY factor - it's just tough to get enough effective cell sites on the air in that state.
Thanks for the advice. I've been happy with Verizon, but I'm trying to lose some weight and get rid of my Treo. If I had better confidence in the Motorola Q, I'd stay with Verizon. Maybe I'll try it in any case....
When Cingular shared towers with T-Mo here I had a chance to use their network for about a year. I think T-Mobile's coverage in Wayne is pretty good considering how T-Mobile is overall in the rest of NJ, and also considering the kind of area Wayne is, which has lots of hills and it is mostly residential with no tall buildings. Now, I can't say the same for other towns around Wayne as T-Mo is somewhat spotty in most of NJ, pretty much the same as Sprint, but not as bad as Nextel. T-Mo still doesn't make it over the Preakness Ave. hill between Wayne and Paterson (call drops) but I've been to almost every street in Wayne and I've found their service to be quite good, except for the usual problems at some indoor locations. For instance, you will get very poor to no signal at the Radio Shack at the Preakness Shopping Center. That's one reason I would never pick a 1900Mhz carrier, at least in this area. Although all of Hamburgh Tpke and Valley Rd has good coverage with no dropped calls or problems while driving. Now, if you want service similar to what you are used to on Verizon, I would say Cingular is the only way in NJ.
ive got to agree with everyone here. If you are going to go from verizon to t-mobile brace yourself. you may shed some weight with the phone but the network trouble youll pick up is probably not worth it.
Depends on where in Northern NJ. Is it the Eastern or the Western Northern NJ? T-Mobile Street Coverage Map are Like 97% Accurate. JD Power considers T-Mobile tops in Service.
T-Mobile is best in customer service, but when it comes to the coverage, that's another story. If your phone doesn't work in your house, what's customer service going to do? Are they going to rush a tower to your neighborhood and have it installed in 10 minutes? We're not talking pizza delivery here.
But it would be great if they could, now wouldn't it. :lmao: It does seem people in my area of the state are fairly happy with T-Mobile, but I can't seem to get an answer from them if they go out west Jersey & how well it works for them (which I know it's poor to non-existent).
The way it works with Sprint/Nextel/T-Mo in NNJ is the closer you get to NYC, the better. But from Passaic Co. going west, things get pretty spotty unless you use Cingular or Verizon. Passaic Co. is not exactly NW NJ.
