I am exploring the switch from USC to VZW but the current offering of Tri-Modes (I travel the hills of the Northeast alot) is slim and the current lineup of all-digitals at the local VZW warehouse wasn't impressive enough to make me want one sooooo....

I would like some advice on the best Tri-mode that you had (reception RULES as I travel the fringes alot)......the only feature that I would like is BT if possible and NO VZW GUI if possible.

    Thanks in advance!!

I've been doing a lot of research on the best tri-mode phone for Verizon and what 've found so far is that you can't beat the Motorola V325i. I just bought the Samsung SCH-a870 and it has horrible call quality.

IMO....you can't get better quality than a Motorola.

LG 9800 AKA EnV is a very close choice to what you might want.

MUHillbilly - I was settled on the 325i for the NOTO reception reputation and TRI-mode UNTIL I held it at the store.....it feels a little cheap (but maybe I won't find anything real solid these days..I currently have a NOKIA 6385 candybar that is bombproof) and the keyboard is all smooth, you need to look at the keypad to dial correctly.....not to mention it has the VZW GUI which makes all the phones look the same, maybe that's an advantage but I haven't warmed up to it yet.

agenthibby - Is the 9800 Analog? The specs make it look digital-only and I'm trying to get a tri-mode as I find myself off the beaten path often.

unfortunately, choices are limited when it comes to the tri-mode market for Verizon. I'm sure in the next few years options will become even more limited or nonexistent.

By 2008 I highly doubt that Verizon will have ANY tri-mode phones in their line-up due to the FCC ruling regarding analog. However, in 2008 there will still be analog towers our tri-mode phones will be able to pick up on.

What would be ideal is to have a tri-mode in something like the RAZR. I can only wish. The RAZR has the best clarity I've ever heard in a phone.

But like I said before, Motorola is at the top of the game and IMO Nokia comes a close second. Also, since the 325i has an external antenna, it automatically has a 5% better reception advantage.

Definitely the best phone Verizon has for reception is the Motorola V325i. I had it for a few days and it was awesome with reception! Never dropped a call! The only reason I got rid of it was because I wanted a VCast phone that had awesome reception. So I got the LG VX8600. But the V325i is AWESOME if you want awesome reception, Tri-Mode, and Bluetooth.

Any thoughts on the MOTO v710......bluetooth, trimode, transflash, (looks like) better keypad, great reception, and hackable?

The MOTO v710 has been discontinued. It was Verizon's FIRST bluetooth phone and it's horrible. Also, it has horrible battery life. But, I'm sure it has great reception.

The Motorola V710 has long since been discontinued by Verizon. You don't want that phone anyways as it was a pretty crappy phone. I heard a lot of negative comments about that phone and one of my friends had one quite a while ago and he went through 4 of them in less than a year! So I'd highly recommend you stay away from the Motorola V710.

If you can get your hands on a Motorola E815 that would be a much better choice for you. Verizon has also discontinued it but you still might be able to find it somewhere.

Wow, I'm surprised at the hostility of the V710 here. From what I've heard, I always held the phone in pretty high regards. ;)

I would also vote for the V325. It's the best tri-mode phone Verizon currently offers, even if it feels a little cheap. The E815, like Dan suggested, may also be a good idea since it has great reception as well, but no Analog.
Question, why do you want to switch from U.S. Cellular to Verizon? I may be wrong, but I think U.S. Cellular has a nice lineup of phones with AMPS...

    Hi. Here's my 2-cents:

First, my bottom line is that I agree with those who tell you not to get a v710, but..............

I've had a v710 for nearly 2 years and personally think it's the best phone (from Verizon) I've had so far. It has a relatively short, about a two day battery life with the normal battery (I have an extra, high capacity battery but don't ever connect it save maybe for a trip away from electricity); provides great signal practically anywhere I go; and has good sound quality. Bluetooth works great and I have several BT headpieces paired with it, all work fine.

We also have a RAZR - slick looking but not as easy (for me anyway) to use/navigate and it isn't trimode. I don't like it at all and it doesn't seem to maintain as good a connectivity as the v710.

I'll hang onto the v710 even after I am again eligible for Renew Every Two once again, at least until Verizon comes out with something better AND changes their Unlimited [NOT] Internet access policy so I can view my security webcam which they somehow think shouldn't be allowed on their system.

However, as has been said, the v710 has been discontinued and I wouldn't recommend trying to find one when there are newer and likely better phones available...maybe even some through Verizon.

I'd endorse the V325i. I gave my mom the V325 this summer and the thing is a reception hog:eek: She somehow broke the antenna on it but the thing works almost perfect. I dont think that if I broke my antenna on an LG that it would measure up. When I go to my hometown to visit, I'll just have the antenna replaced (for about $10) and all will be fine:)

UH OH....I didn't expect so much negative on the v710.

One guy at work has had a couple 710's and another one recently had his run over by his brother and it still works fine.....a third has an E815 that was a little damaged and when he tried to break it to get a replacement HAD to run it over to get sufficient breakage SOOOO I thought they should be tuff enuff for me....I really think I want AMPS though so the 815 is out...and I HATED HATED HATED the keypad on the v325i. The v710 feels solid in my hand, the buttons are good enough, it has a tad more features (it seems) than the v325i. I went to increase my minutes (cuz all my friends are on VZW) and the new plans at USC would cost me $12 more a month with no IN calling and only allowing NH, ME, and VT without roaming (my old plan for the $12 less went down to PA). When I asked about IN calling like VZW the call was 'dropped'....can you imagine? The way I see it USC is getting their butt kicked and as much as I hate the conglomerates that lock up your bluetooth and force their standard GUI down your throat a 2 year trial wouldn't hurt.

I may well get a dope slap :loony: from MUHillbilly and TNDan21 but maybe BradQue and Andy will help me out cuz here's what I done...........

I bought a v710 brandy new on Ebay along with an extended battery, car charger, leather pouch, a Plantronics 510 BT, and a 1GB card. I plan to finance this with the sale of the Samsung a930 (should be an even swap) that I got for free when I signed up...maybe a bizarre trade but I'm not convinced that all-digital is the way to go just yet and the Tri-mode options were dismal.

I REALLY appreciate the thoughts and suggestions of you guys though as good info is often hard to find.

DAN - What exactly crappy should I expect with the v710??

Go ahead......let me have it, I may have pulled the trigger a little early.

    mtn-bike,

You got my endorsement. I've got my v710 working right now and I won't switch until something really great comes out that is both a good phone and a replacement for my iPaq and better than both.

So, I don't know how much you paid for the phone on ebay but assuming you didn't get taken, I suspect you will like the phone's performance pretty much.

My one and only gripe with Verizon is that they don't let me access and view an IP webcam I have on a house of mine. Something about not allowing video streaming....but, my daughter's Sidekick on TMobile views it fine. If VZW would loose the big brother attitude, they'd get even bigger.

    Later,

    Brad

I went to the VZW and Motorola sites and neither site claims that the W315 features Bluetooth; but is tri-mode.
