i have been using tracfone for 2 years now, and it's time to try something better. i am a light cell phone user, so i generally spend the minimum on minutes. i have been reading good things about verizon's freeup, and was wondering what you guys think. they seem to have good coverage for northern ohio (cleveland area is where i live). can someone explain to me the best deal to get and the extras that go with it? thanks
i'm sick of tracfone's lack of features, and i would like a nice phone possibly with AIM and text messaging

thanks again, glad i found this site

Free-Up is a great pre-paid service. AT&T also has an awesome new pre-paid service if they offer GSM coverage where you are. It is called Go-Phone and you can check it out at attwireless.com

it seems verizon looks like the better deal for my area.
i have a question about a phone though

does anyone here have the motorola t720pp (i'm sure the pp means pre pay) set up on the freeup plan?

if so, how is it? that is the phone that looks the nicest. let me know, thanks

I would stay away from the 720, that phone is widely known as having horrible battery life and a ton of other issues and bugs. If you go to a Verizon store and talk to them, they should be able to setup any phone that they have on pre-pay. It may be a little more cost up-front, but it is well worth it to avoid the nightmare of the 720.

I am not sure if they offer it where you are, but Wal-Mart sells a service called Simple Freedom. The service is provided by Alltel and uses the Alltel and Verizon networks. The phone they offer is sort of crappy but it is a better plan than Tracphone I think.

have you looked at virgin mobile? they offer the best plans for people who don't talk alot. $20 minimum every 90 days, $.25/minute for first 10 mins. a day, then $.10/min after that. my phone's software was messed up, so sometimes i didn't end up paying for minutes i used, then other times i ended up paying for minutes i didn't use- wierd. however, their cust. service has gotten much better, and the virgin extras can actually come in handy at times. check out the website

I would suggest either FreeUp or Virgin Mobile. Verizon has a better network, but Virgin Mobile has much better rates. ATT GoPhone has great rates, but ATT GSM network isn't very good. Plus the minutes are only good for 30 days

FREEUP has free weekend minutes which are a great bonus. Also, Verizon probably has a better network in your area, but make sure to check the map. Virgin Mobile would be my second choice: Daytime rates are great, but there is no discount for nites or weekends and it uses Sprint.

I've been using VirginMobile since 11/02 (Minneapolis area) and am
very satisfied with it. Coverage is very good (Sprint) and I've only had
1 problem call that didn't disconnect. Called customer service and it
was corrected immediately. They now have 3 different phones
available but I'm still using the Kyocera 2119b. It's an OK phone
and the battery life is very good..........Greg

i've cancelled out virgin mobile, the sprint pcs coverage is just so spotty in northern ohio
i fear a call will not go through when i need the phone the most. since coverage is most important to me , and wal mart has the simple freedom phones for 50 bucks, i may go with this.
