Can I switch from another carrier and supply my own phones and not have a long term contract? Do not want to sign a long term contract when I switch to Tmobile. Thinking of buying phones on ebay (used T-mobile GSM phones) and trying go month to month? Will they go for that if I pay the activation fees? If not do I have any other option to prevent a long term contract?

You can use any unlocked GSM phone with T-Mobile. You can also use an AT&T-branded phone, provided it is unlocked, otherwise it won't work.

T-Mobile will not have a problem with you using your own phone. You'll only need to pay for a SIM card, get it activated and you're set.

Keep in mind, only certain T-Mobile phones are 3G capable for their network, so if you plan on using data, know your T-Mo 3G phone selection is limited. Also, if you text or do any other kind of data activity, you modify settings in the phone to make them work properly with T-Mobile's data services. There is no guarantee it will work, though.

Also keep in mind you can buy phones from tmobile and start service without a contract, benefit being that you get the warranty for your phones supported from tmobile. If you buy a used phone no warranty option is given.
