To me, it's pretty obvious that smart watches are the future of watches, but there are still a lot of major watch manufacturers that sell thousand dollar watches that simply tell time. I am talking about TAG Heuer, Oakley, Omega...etc... A few have added fitness applications, but that's about it. I just read that Swatch is working with Visa to make a NFC pay-by-the-wrist Swatch watch, so I guess they are starting to see future, but aren't quite there yet. http://www.swatch.com/en/pages/swatch-and-visa-collaboration
For me the jury is still out. IMHO, even more than phones, watches are a very personal item. Even more than phones, they are a declaration of individuality and statement of style, personality, class and more. For example, here i am a 64-yr-old geek that loves tech and got the smartwatch because I can configure the face exactly as I want and wear it no matter if I'm in a suit or jeans. However, an 19-yr-old that I am a mentor to prefers gold-laden, bulky analog watches. (He actually collects them and switches which he wears as often as he changes his attire. He still lives with his aunt so he can afford to and does spend SEVERAL hundred dollars on a single watch.)
I can't see myself getting a smartwatch any time soon. I very rarely change watches, my current one is about 10 years old, the one before I had for about 15. Can't remember how long I had the one before that. With smartwatches they'll become obsolete just as quickly as the phones do… not worth the expense for me to stay current.
I see now that TAG Heuer has also started making the move, but the price is $1500 http://www.tagheuerconnected.com/product
I like that one. My problem is that all smart watches are fated to be obsolete. A $1500 self winding chronograph will still be able to function 50+ years from now (with maintenance).
I've been very happy with mine. For $249, it was a good entry decision, to test the waters. I expect the cycle time to be much longer, than a smartphone. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
Several years ago my wife bought me a silver, square-faced Skagen watch. I loved it because it was so thin. It didn't catch on my long-sleeve shirts or sweaters when I put the clothing on or took it off. But it lacked DOW & date. So then I saw a round, blue-faced Skagen watch with day and date. I bought that but as my sight began to worsen, I couldn't see the day or date because they were so small. I waited until this year to get the ZenWatch2 and love it. No more having to adjust the date to "1" following months that have less than 31 days. No more struggling to see the DOW or date because I configured them to be extra large. The watch was only $150 at Best Buy.
I love my Skagen slim titanium watch ( with sapphire face). Had it for 15 years, and still good and scratch free! It's my only regret with getting the Apple Watch. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
