I will be moving to Kerrville TX soon. :) I can't seem to find out what carrier(s) will work best there. Most have coverage along I 10 but anywhere off the highway gets dicey. I have Vzw now. Anyone have suggestions including any future plans in that area? Thanks.

Your two cellular operators are Concho Cellular (A-band) and Five Star Cellular (B-band). Neither one has a web site presently.

Use your existing Verizon phone when you arrive, and see if its coverage is good enough. You can track down cellular stores after you've arrived, if it's not good enough.

Make sure you have a mobile charger there. A VZW phone will most likely only see analog. Concho has added GSM in the area, but not for their customers, only for roamers. This may change soon.

Does that mean CDMA may come to Hill Country after all?

That is the same thing I was wondering. I'm sure Alltel would love to have their wireless properties. It would at least connect a portion their central Texas island of coverage with the huge part of their WW western Texas coverage. Alltel would still have one more isolated island of coverage in the extreme southern tip of Texas. It is just too bad that Alltel cannot get one of the cellular sides for southern Tx. That would really unite a good portion of their Texas properties. (It is still hard to believe that the FCC let Cingular keep both cellular sides [after the ATW merger] of such a large area of Tx.)

5-star is a creation of the ILEC's in that area. Valor does seem to have some exchanges around there...

I did find this one article which says a little about it:

Verizon Wireless has had great coverage for a long time in Kerrville. I live in Kerrville and Five Star is horrible and Cellular One...don't even try that. The only other decent provider is Sprint. I'm not sure about Cingular.
