Anybody else think their service sucks? Ive been with them for two years and am now switching to Verizon. Verizon service is great and actually works out where I live. The customer care people are polite. I advise all of you to think twice before going with Suncom. Not once in the two years that I had Suncom did I see their service improve. Yeah, it works on the interstates, but down try going to far from them in the smaller cities. Shoot, in clemson, sc, you go one mile from where they sell suncom phones and plans and youre roaming... THey lie to you to get you to stay with them (I know from experience) and are rude people to talk to. Sure their plans look cheap, but you'll either be paying for roaming or not have service. Even the Unplan is a ripoff.
I had Suncom service for about 4-1/2 years, was on a month-to-month after my initial contract expired. I had their 10 state regional plan and found their coverage to be good, including in the Clemson area (I never once paid a roaming charge anywhere in the southeast). I was a happy camper, but when I needed to replace my aging phone they wouldn't come off of the "evergreen clause" in their contract. I didn't want to be trapped in a self-renewing contract several years down the road so I left and went with someone who didn't do that to me (Verizon, America's Choice plan). Suncom wasn't willing to come off of the evergreen clause until I told them to pull the plug, but then it was too late. I'd already had it with them. I've got a friend who travels with his business in the SC/GA area. They canceled him because he made too many calls outside his local calling area.
Thanks for the feedback... I agree with everything you've said here. It'll be a real pain on May 24th fighting with Suncom about their stupid policies. If you have to give a 30 day notice to cancel, what day is it that you actually port? If you port a day before they'll prob charge an ETF and if you wait until the day they'll prob cancel your service so you won't be able to port.
Scary!! If I understand correctly, you must notify of your intent to cancel at least 30 days prior to the expiration of your contract. Could you call 45 days ahead of time and set your account to cancel in 60 days, then try to port your number in those 15 days between contract expiration and service cancellation? Knowing what I do about Suncom, I guess the answer is probably no.
It's 30 days for Suncom, but be careful, theyll try to change your cancellation date as much as possible. I had to have a phone number change, which they say they do hassle free...but then when i called to cancel, they had me 5 months later than when I started. Then, they changed it to the date I bought the new phone, which was still incorrect. So finally, they agreed it was May 1st. I called them a week before May 1st, just to make sure they got it straight, and the date had changed to May 24th! (Oh, im sorry, we have no record of that ever happening...BS) Even though i called 30 days prior to May 1st. Despite emails, faxes, calling, and visiting stores, I can not get them to cancel the phone on May 1st like it should have been. They deny sending emails to me confirming May 1st, one customer service center person texted me to say she received my faxes and would cancel on May 1st...Gee, so they cant track a text message, cover their ___ while lying to me so I believe it cancels on May 1st and have nothing to worry about. I have been given 2 wrong fax numbers by the same person (who most likely sent the text). I had the 10 state plan, but it doesnt help if youre roaming because my calls never go through, despite not having to worry about paying for it. Seeing how i now have Verizon and Suncom (idiots!), I compare them everywhere I go, and Verizon always has a stronger signal, and a lot of the times has a signal when Suncom doesnt.
From what I understand new SunCom customers do not have self renewing contracts. Current customers contracts appear to still be self renewing though. This will cause trouble with Number portabilty I believe. If you get the right rep at CS SunCom will let you go month to month. Not all reps will let you go month to month though. Even the ones that do seem to hate suggesting you can do that. Basically once SunCom has you as a customer they don't want you to go. There not above lying to the customer to do it either. SunCom has great coverage in my area but I'm very frustrated with there Customer Service as of lately. It's gone way down hill. My grandmother has SunCom and when her contract runs out in late June I'm thinking about switching her to ALLTEL or Cingular Wireless.
Man... it really is bad, customers ask me to talk to them to help them try to figure out how to cancel. Cancelling suncom is like trying to play publisher's clearing house. :notworthy
I like suncom....but my opinion is a bit skewed...I sell for Verizon...they are sending me lots of business this month.
suncom actually doesn't have a store in clemson. that's an agent store. suncom's coverage in clemson is actually pretty good... central, on the other hand leaves something to be desired. cingular's is the best, but good luck trying to make a call after 9 pm. verizon isn't too bad either, but suffers from random outages from time to time. btw, the 30 day notice is waived for a port, but if you're still under contract you will be charged the ETF. the evergreen is gone and is being treated as if it never existed.
You are contradicting yourself... You say you don't have to give a 30 day notice to cancel... if there is no more evergeen clause than why do you have to give a 30 day notice at all?
GO SunCom!! I loved SunCom when I was in VA. They have really good service there, I had 5 bars which is the best for my phone so I am pretty excited about them. Does anyone know what will happen to SunCom after Cingular and AT&T merge?
They seem to be going solo... they now advertise themselves as "Suncom Wireless" with no AT&T affiliation. Also they have said they are interested in aquiring new spectrum in neighboring markets.
I think maybe he means that if you are porting a number the 30 day clause is gone, but if you want to just outright cancel the 30 day clause still applies?
Well if that's the case then that's retarted. Either way for old, new, or porting customers that stupid self renewel clause should be gone.
I used Suncom for about 5 years. I really didn't have a problem with it as I rarely used my phone. However, when work required me to travel more, Suncom couldn't keep up. Nor did they seem interested in updating their phone service to include other features such as internet access (in my area during the last quarter of 2003). When I called to talk to them about my problems and concerns they didn't seem too interested in anything other then reminding me of their self-renewing contract (sounds like the business practice of a bad porn site or something). Well, I managed to finally rid myself of Suncom, pick up 300 more minutes, text messaging, 1 meg of internet, and 5,000 minutes of night and weekends for about $30 less a month (on three phones). They lost me with their poor attitude, lackluster customer service, and predatory practices. If the company goes belly-up, I'll applaud their death.
That pretty much describes exactly how I feel about SunCom now. There coverage in my area is fine and they have made some improvements lately in some areas but it's too little and too late now. I'll be happy the day the company is bought out. I'm personally hoping that T-Mobile buys them out in the future. I'd love to see T-Mobile get them.
Try ALLTEL, as you may or may not know, ALLTEL and Verizon roam on each other's systems, so the coverage is better than Nextel, Cingular, Sprint, T Mobile or anyone's especially SunComm. I don't know why you would go with carrier that has such a small network.
I have a friend in Bristol, TN who had the Suncom unplan as well as Sprint. Suncom decided to increase his unplan price by $10 so he cancelled. He still has the Sprint and has a retention plan where he gets 750 anytime minutes plus 500 pcs to pcs for $39.99 a month as well as his old 8pm nights and weekend minutes start time. There are probably others who have better Sprint retention plans, but his is pretty good in my opinion. It's kind of funny that Suncom increases their prices on their customers and expects that their customers won't leave, and Sprint gives better deals to keep their customers from leaving. Any other carrier give as good retention deals as Sprint? Some would say that the other carriers don't need to. Well, I don't know any other carrier that has the coverage, the phone selection, the latest technology, and the best retention deals that Sprint has. It's also American owned and not partially owned by some foreign company like you know who! (I'm not referring to Suncom either!)
Ok just to clarify some things about SunCom's contracts. My grandmother called SunCom June 17th to inform them to please shut off her service when the contract runs out. She was told SunCom still requires 30 days notice for her service to be shut off but ETF's are no longer applied and the contracts do not self renew when they are up now. So her service is set to be terminated on July 17th. As far as retention goes she received a letter from SunCom yesterday. They are offering her one of two choices if she renews with them for one more year. 2 Free Months of service plus a $130 phone credit towards a new phone. Or 15% off her monthly rate plan and a $130 phone credit towards a new phone. She was going to switch to ALLTEL but since this SunCom offer on the table is pretty good she might just go ahead and try to work something out with them. I will give SunCom one good thing they do try to keep you as a customer and make fairly good deals with you to keep you.
$3 off the monthly service plan wouldn't keep me bound to a company such as Suncom, but to each it's own.
It wouldn't me either. The Two months of free service though and a $130 phone credit is very tempting though.
