My wife and I each have the old Un-Plan with SunCom, unlimited local minutes and 300 roaming minutes each month. The last few trips out of the area, her phone goes into emergency use only mode while mine switches to Cingular and works fine. When I called SunCom, they couldn't figure it out and ask that my wife call them the next time she's out of the area and her phone goes into emergency only mode so they can troubleshoot.:loony: This just seems crazy to me, I don't want to waste my time with them trying to figure this out, I want a phone on a network that works! I told them I will be switching to a different provider.
They'd be better off just replacing your phone... but then again, when does suncom do ANYTHING that makes the least bit of sense? Heck, look at their stock prices! http://finance.google.com/finance?q=suncom
LOL, that's too funny. Did you see this at the bottom of that page? If I read this correctly then their company isn't worth their physical assets. unless their stock is really dilluted and they have a lot of shares out there. They need to do a stock buyback, but they probably can't raise the funding to do it. They can't operate at that much of a loss for more than a few years, then they're going to have to sell out unless they can turn that company around. -Jay
The plan that their on is an old tdma plan if i'm not mistaken. They are not selling tdma phones any longer so you may have to upgrade to a newer gsm plan.
I am in the same area as you Adkraus1. I'm in the Kingsport, TN area and I've been down that road before with SunCom. Honestly SunCom is the worst provider in the Tri-Cities. They have awful CS and the coverage is crappy in this area. You'd be better off switching to somebody else than to deal with SunCom.
Reading that page gives you an idea of just how deep into debt the company really is... I don't see them recovering anytime soon, if ever.
Believe it or not, it is a gsm plan. We traded our tdma phones in when they switched to the gsm network. You are correct though, it is an old plan.
They don't get it. I just played around on their site and they are now charging 15 bucks per line for nights and weekends on national plans. It use to be that if you got a national plan and added a line it was 15 bucks for nights and weekends on both lines, it is now 30 bucks! For something that every other carrier gives you! I "purchased" 2 lines, 800 minutes on a national plan, nights and weekends, and the circle of friends feature and the monthly fee was 119.88! OMG! What a ripoff on a crappy network! I get nights and weekend and circle free with Alltel! We will be saying "RIP Suncom" real soon!
LOL RIP Suncom is right...I'm on the $59 unlimited plan, but based on their financials, I fully expect to wake up one day and see that their company has dried up and blown away!
:lmao: LOL! No doubt... your avatar speaks volumes. Good luck. Can't wait until you join us in the land of the T.
Just heard they are also doing away with free incoming text messages! They keep getting rid of the only things that would make them attractive in the first place.
I switched over to Verizon and am loving it. I haven't been in a spot where my phone did not have a signal yet in my area! Suncom did terminate my line as soon as they got the request from VZW to port my number. I was without service for a day. VZW said that my service with Suncom would be fine until I activated my new phone with them. Suncom told me Verizon turned it off. How can an outside party turn my service off? I figured only me or Suncom could do that. I believe Suncom lied to me. They keep going downhill.
Verizon is too expensive for me. But the service will be good and so will customer suport. I think ypu will be happy.
Suncom didn't lie to you. When you send a port request, it goes to a central location that handles all ports. Verizon sent your port request to the central company, who forwarded it to Suncom. Sucnom terminated your account when they got that request. It certainly can take time for the port process to complete and be up and running with your new carrier.
ALLTEL is probably just as good as Verizon, and even more customer orientated. You are probably not unhappy with ALLTEL.
As you know we both live in the same area and I think you will be very happy with Verizon. Verizon's coverage in the Tri-Cities is fantastic. Hands down the best network in the Tri-Cities.
Actually in the Tri-Cities, TN/VA area Alltel's coverage is not as good as Verizon's. I've also found Verizon's customer service to be better than Alltel's. Alltel's coverage in this area is close to Verizon but overall Verizon has a bit better coverage and a more reliable network. If I had to rate the wireless providers in my area I'd put them in the following order. 1. Verizon Wireless 2. Alltel 3. Sprint PCS 4. Cingular Wireless 5. SunCom
Interesting, I didn't know who to believe. I strongly considered Alltel. Their plans and extras are nice but I went through all those little gimmicks and plan changes with Suncom and didn't want to do that again. They were always changing something. I also talked to a few Alltel users around here and they expressed having more and more dropped calls with Alltel. I got a discount through my employer so I decided to go with VZW. I don't regret it a bit. Their customer service has been great. Way better than Suncoms. I found it difficult to get in contact with Alltel at times when I had questions. Also, the people at the stores seem much more friendly and knowledgable at VZW.
From my experience Verizon has excellent customer service. Alltel's on the other hand is kinda hit or miss and has limited hours. Alltel could use some improvement on customer service.
I have heard this from users on here before but I have never had a problem getting through and cs has always been excellent for me. In fact, they seem to be getting even better lately. As far as the op mentioning Suncom with their extras and changing things all the time, for the record Alltel doesn't do that.
I finally got the answer to this problem. The Suncom rep told me Cingular cut them off from roaming on their towers. She thought maybe the national plan could but wasn't sure. Their agreement is with TMobile. Here's from their web site: "Access to largest GSM network in America." What good is this if they can't use it. CRAZY! Knoxville, TN has no TMobile service! They are a mickey mouse company!!:loony: :loony:
My sis was just here in Knoxville and she has suncom and it roamed on Cingular. It also roamed on Cingular in Disney while she was in Fl.
Part of the deal with Triton PCS (Suncom) on the swap of properties in NC (old AT&T) and Va was that Suncom would have better rates to roam on Cingular. I believe the Suncom rep told you a lie. Cingular doesn't mind collecting roaming from Suncom.
I just read a thread somewhere about a guy who roams on Cingular in Greensboro, NC all the time. He actually programmed his phone to prefer Cingular on his Suncom phone. I can't find the thread I have to agree with Blsemp (for a change:browani: ). The Suncom rep is full of it.
can someone quik tell me about suncom and how its servic works, ur saying it bites off other services when its outta range? and if its service is lousy, does that mean it has few towers, or can it bte off a cingular tower if it switches to cingular mode? yea, what role do the towers play in a situation like the one mentioned here??
Hmm ... kinda strange to me that you feel this way TNDan. I'm from about 40 miles North of Kingsport and I feel the exact opposite about the customer service of the two companies. I have Verizon on my landline and an Alltel Wireless Plan. The Verizon tech support has always been extremely useless and it takes them at least 2 weeks to get around to repairing a phone line that has been damaged by lightning or something to that effect, and another 2 weeks to repair my neighbor's phone who they turned off to fix mine and never turned theirs back on (True Story). Along with input from other friends with about VerizonWireless tech support and customer service, this was one of the main reasons I went with Alltel. I was just in Kingsport for a couple nights with family members and I never had any trouble receiving at least 4 bars no matter where I was so the service appears to be great for Alltel in the Tri-cities. Customer service has been a blessing compared to what I'm use to. Just my experience though.
That's what we call "roaming" when you make a call on another company's network. No one company can possibly build a network that covers everywhere, so in certain cases your carrier may allow you to use another network. -Jay
thanks jay, disregard my asking again, i didnt see this post and i think i posted it again in another category, but my only question is dont the companies have to be on the same MHZ's? and don they have to have contracts to cover say a cingular roamer roaming on to a tmobile network? and do some model phones show what company u are roaming with once ur outta ur own providers range? im purchasing my nextel i850 this week and do u know off hand if nextel or any companies tell who ur roaming with once ur in roaming mode, does it pop up on the little screen?
