Today, June 21, 2008 is the first full day of Summer! And Mama Nature decided to throw her "Summer Sizzle" party in the Desert Southwest, and boy, she ain't messin' around... Hell has arrived as temps have been over 110 degrees for 3 days now, and today with be the 4th.. Summer's just begun and it feels like September. It was still 90 degrees at Midnight, but fortunately it's cooled down to a "chilly" 79 degrees by 5AM. Today's high is forecast to be 111. JOY!!! Oh well, at least we aren't dealing with those horrible floods going on in the Midwest. Still, 90 degrees for a daytime high would be nice right about now... If you're planning to come to Southern California, remember to bring comfy clothes, an egg, and a frying pan, and you'll be all set.
Its been quite nice in the DC area this past week. Highs in the 80's, lows in the 60's. We don't even have the a/c on at home. -Jay
Wirelessly posted (Walkguru's: Opera/9.50 (J2ME/MIDP; Opera Mini/4.1.11328/534; U; en)) man thats hot. its been in the ninetys here.
It must be nice. I have a feeling SoCal is in for a scorching summer (not like I'm surprised or anything...). I know you're enjoying it, Jay, because once the oppressive heat and humidity arrive, that AC of yours will be crankin'.
It sure has, out here along the Colorado River it has been 112-115 all week long. We should be about 10 degrees cooler this time of year.
I never turn on the a/c. My roommate and I play chicken with the a/c and heat. He's always the one to turn on the a/c and heat.
I have been blasting the AC since May began and as a result, my bill went from $78 to $126 and its not coming down anytime soon.
My AC broke down last week and so I had to endure another miserable night. Even with the windows open and fans blowing I still felt like 100 degrees. Ugh.
you people have no idea what hot is. when you have so much Humidity that you can cut it with a knife and you are sweating in the shade then you will have just came to GA.
The DC area gets pretty humid. We have the bay and the ocean not too far away. It gets hot and sticky here. That was the only thing that really bothers me is the humidity. I can remember when I was younger I had that old Pontiac with vinyl seats. Vinyl wears well, and the interior looked great, but they were a bear in the summer. -jay
I grew up in Atlanta, so I do know about those hot sticky summers... And its made worse for me because of the pollution and pollen. Tallahassee is only 18 miles from the Gulf of Mexico and 2 hours from the Atlantic ocean.... Its worse here in a way. The only upside is that there are no mountains keeping the smog in one spot.
We don't have the oppressive humidity, but hot is hot. Believe me, I've been to Miami in the summertime and it's a lot worse there than it is where you are. This is why I'm glad I don't live back east.
It was 113 mind-numbing degrees in my neck of the woods on Saturday. Though there is a cooling trend happening in the coming days, it's supposed to "cool off" to 108 today...I feel a chill coming on...
Wow Mike that is scorching! I was in Phoenix in August once. It was 119. I remember there was no humidity, so you could breath...but you still sweated your butt off...it was still hot! It's been cooler, less humid than usual here. Upper 70's to low 80's and dry, dry, dry...which I hate. I need some humidity! I know that sounds crazy, but my body hates the dryness. Quint, hows about sending some of that gulf moisture up here from Tally?
It go up to 111 today, but it didn't fell like it. I was at the like all afternoon, so that may have had something to do with that.
Sunday it reached 110 here and Monday it hit 102, so the "cooling trend" has begun...That is until the next high-pressure system parks itself somewhere near the four-corners and all of this starts up again. I can tell this is going to be a miserably hot summer, with an out-of-control electric bill to boot...
Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows 98; PalmSource/Palm-D062; Blazer/4.5) 16;320x320) the weather here in dc has been nice... and while socal is scortching hot at least you all don't have miserable humidity like we do here. late july/ mid august can be miserable around here.
As far as warm summers go, I have lived in Texas, Florida, Ohio, and Arizona. I will take humidity over extreme hot and dry any day. Both make you sweat a ton...both are uncomfortable, but a dry hat just sucks the energy out of you. My line of work takes me outside a lot. I can assure you that I get tired and more miserable much faster here in the desert than I ever did in a humid location. In Florida, it would be miserable during the day, but at night it was usually pleasant and in the upper 70's. Nothing beats a humid southern night IMO. Here in AZ, at midnight it is still 100+ degrees, and soon our lows will be in the upper 80's to low 90's. It is VERY depressing when your lows are most places normal highs for summer!
You bring up some great points about dry heat. Those point are why I can't wait to get out of Bullhead. If I even have a chance to move back to SoCal with the smog & traffic, I will go in a heart beat. Every time I go back and visit family in SoCal I don't want to come back home.
I wouldn't mind!!! The temperature has been dropping over the last few days, low 90's during the day and upper 60's at night. Every other day, we been getting 'sea breeze' thunderstorms so the temperature hasn't been skyrocketing.
And July hasn't arrived yet when that month hits, it will be that and sticky! Yuck! And then the sun comes up and it's instantly hot at 8 in the morning. I should be used to this by now since I lived in the South all my life, but I will never like it. Come on November and December! I think I'll take 90 degree dry heat over 115 dry heat or 90 degree heat and humidity! I'll stop complaining now since I can't control the seasons, Fall and Winter will be here before I know it and I won't be as sad lol
It actually rained twice within a 24 hour period! A thunderstorm just developed right over the city... Just the city, so I am listening to rain, thunder, and the BBC. I got poured on at 5PM today LOL
Though I haven't lived anywhere outside of California, I have visited many places in this country for extended periods of time to experience summer humidity. Though I would rather take the dry heat, there are times when temperature extremes, here in SoCal, make me wish otherwise. As hot and nasty humid as Miami can be in the summer, it NEVER gets to 100 degrees. I know this is because they are at a tropical latitude. It amazes me how we can go from 92 to 115 in a few days. And Matt, I agree with you about nights not cooling down. Even this past weekend, it was still in the mid 90's at Midnight, only cooling off to about 83 by 5AM. It's ridiculous. Oh well, this is the price I pay for living where I do, which despite the threat of catastrophic earthquakes, is still a pretty nice place, even with the traffic...
We've been having daily thunderstorms... You can set your watch to it. 4:00 on the dot it starts to rain. Have to mow the lawn twice a week.
A lawn, what's that? The last few years the Monsoons have not been hitting our area like they normally do. Hopefully soon we will get some major thunderstorms popping up.
