I posted this issue in the Nokia section, but unfortunately the advice I was given did not work for me.

So, I have this phone, right? It's probably one of the crappiest phones ever - a nokia 3585i, I believe? <- Over here it says. I've been told that the voicemail service through alltel is part of the basic package - free for all - but I can't seem to figure how to put it on my ol' classic. There is an option under messages to enter a voice mailbox number, but 1. it doesn't call it and 2. even if it did, I wouldn't know what number to put in there. Anytime I miss a call, the caller gets the messege, "the wireless customer you are trying to reach is unavailable at this time. Please try again later." with no voicemail option.
So.... If anyone wants to clue me in as to how to get this to work, that would be great. The advice I was given was to call *78, but when I do this it says the number is unavailable every time and to call *611 or something like that. When I do that, it tells me that in order to activate voicemail I must call the *78. Thanks alltel, real helpful.
    Any other advice?

Well, to get your VM from your phone all you have to do is dial your own number with area code. That is the number you would put in the voicemail number box. It may be giving people that message because your VM hasn't been setup by you yet. Call your own number and set up the voicemail. Then see if it still happens. If it asks you for the pin, try 0000, or 9999. One of those is default. If not call CS and have them reset your VM password.

if your getting the *611 message when dialing *78, it means Voicemail is not on your account. You may not have a rate plan that gives it free or you may have waited too long to set it up so the audit report thinks you must not want it and to save space on the voicemail platform, deleted your box. Tech can correct either issue. Also, on your phone, the voicemail call back number is your own phone number. Plug that in there so you don't have to dial your own number. Instead, you can use the shortcuts on your phone.

hi richal, have the same problem activating my alltel phone's voicemail. what i did to make it work is that i pressed on "1" and that key by default is the speed key dial for the phones voice mail box. then just follow the voice prompt to set up first your voice mail box password, after that it would ask you on how you want the callers to hear your mailbox.
    hope this help.

Welcome to Wireless Advisor, emhil07. As this thread is nearly 3 years old, the original poster probably got the answer he needed, but your post may help someone currently dealing with this issue. For the sake of further new posts to a dated thread, I'm locking it, but feel free to start a new thread if you have any other information to add about Alltel voicemail.
