Mobile ad exchange Mobclix is releasing a survey this morning which examines the usage of the Verizon iPhone vs. the AT&T iPhone in the U.S. The Verizon iPhone was released to the public over a month ago, and according to Mobclix’s data, larger metropolitan cities have higher Verizon iPhone usage. The top cities with the highest Verizon iPhone usage across the Mobclix exchange include San Francisco, Los Angeles, Seattle, Chicago, New York City and Boston. Of course, it’s well known that AT&T has more reception problems in more densely populated cities (i.e. San Francisco). Mobclix also reports that AT&T iPhone owners use WiFi an average of 53% of the time compared to 38% of the time for Verizon iPhone owners. Why? Because AT&T has poor reception, AT&T owners have to tap into the phone’s WiFi technology more frequently due to poor carrier reception, although carrier to carrier, AT&;T data speeds are faster than Verizon. It’s important to note that AT&T’s WiFi network includes over 24,000 AT&T WiFi Hot Spots through the U.S., and the iPhone supports auto-authentication, making it automatic for customers to connect to Hot Spots or AT&T’s hotzones without it counting toward their monthly smartphone data usage. Another fun fact from the survey—2 in 3 AT&T iPhone owners who switched to the Verizon iPhone paid the $325 early-termination fee. The top 3 reasons for iPhone owners making the switch to Verizon are reception issues, the Personal Hot Spot feature and reputation, says Mobclix. On Mobclix’s exchange, 14% of iPhone 4 users are on the Verizon Network and account for 4% of total iPhone users. As we heard from mobile ad network Millennial Media, the Verizon iPhone only accounted for 4.5 percent of all U.S. iPhone impressions on the network in the first two weeks following the launch. Study Shows AT&T iPhone Owners Rely On WiFi More Than Verizon iPhone Users
I have my WiFi on all the time, not because of reception issues, but because at&t has EDGE around here and it is disgustingly slow. In fact, I grew so sick of the speeds that I built out a WiFi network throughout my house, yard, barn, and underground storage facility. Works like a charm
I am on WiFi anytime I can. I have 3g here but WiFi is still faster. Mozilla/5.0 (Linux; U; Android 2.1-update1; en-ca; SonyEricssonX10a Build/2.1.A.0.435) AppleWebKit/530.17 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Mobile Safari/530.17
I rarely use the WiFi on my phone... I live in a virtual Wifi desert... mostspots that I travel by are secured and I am rarely at one spot for long to use it. So I am camped out Verizon's network. I have WiFi at home, but I'd rather use my laptop for computing purposes at home. I did access WiFi on the Greyhound bus; alas, it was based on Sprint towers. It made for slow surfing in the sticks. I gave up and used my Verizon phone. A few local buses have it as well, but VZW's network is faster than the Sprint network based WiFi hotspots.
I use WiFi on my iPhone 4 for 3 reasons: 1- Battery seems to last longer. 2- Saves my data plan from going over my 2GB limit. 3- Is faster than 3G. Although 3G is very good in my area and very fast.
Use WiFi all the time at home. Why not make use of my little wireless network. It's much faster than Verizon's data network out here. It also keeps my monthly data usage on VZ down considerably, though I've never used more than 350MB in a given month on Verizon while on an unlimited plan.
Although I have no data limit to worry about, I keep my WiFi on just about full time. I keep it on at home, at school/work, and when in the downtown area. Obviously, I do this because my vzw data doesn't work around here. However, there are enough open wifi spots that I can just leave it on and I connect to something.
Considering I don't even get Verizon 3G in my house anymore...I'll take wifi. Verizon needs to get 3G on 850 in south New Jersey. It's stupid to have 3-4 bars (-80) signal of voice and no 3G. I love how at&t got flack for this, though admittedly on voice channels, but with Verizon it's ok.
I've noticed that a ton back home in the NYC market. Since Verizon has voice running on both 850 and 1900, you will never really see that signal dip below EV, which is only run on 1900. This creates a lot of situations where my phone will get stuck on 1x, since every time a call is made or a text is sent or received, the phone must use the 1x channels, and then reacquire the weaker EV signal. That never happened on Sprint, as everything was just on 1900.
Wifi whenever it is there and if it is faster I stay on it. 99% of the time when there is WIFI, it is usually faster than using 3G I would do the same if it was even 4G. I don't care about what I am using (have the unlimited, but what ever is faster wins.
Since I switched to the Verizon iPhone, I am using wifi much less. Just because the 3G at my house is faster than my wifi. Quite sad, but I'm loving it way more than AT&T's EDGE
