Students Find Ring Tone Adults Can't Hear High-pitched ‘Mosquito’ originally created to disperse youngsters The Associated Press Updated: 4:24 p.m. ET June 12, 2006 NEW YORK - Students are using a new ring tone to receive messages in class — and many teachers can't even hear the ring. Some students are downloading a ring tone off the Internet that is too high-pitched to be heard by most adults. With it, high schoolers can receive text message alerts on their cell phones without the teacher knowing. As people age, many develop what's known as aging ear — a loss of the ability to hear higher-frequency sounds. The ring tone is a spin-off of technology that was originally meant to repel teenagers — not help them. A Welsh security company developed the tone to help shopkeepers disperse young people loitering in front of their stores while leaving adults unaffected. The company called their product the "Mosquito." Donna Lewis, a teacher in Manhattan, says her colleague played the ring for a classroom of first-graders — and all of them could hear it, while the adults couldn't hear anything. What I'm surprised by is that cell phone speakers can actually reproduce these high frequencies. Either cell phone speakers are much better than I think, or my aged ears are probably worse than I know..
Steve, can you hear your TV when it is turned on? If you do, your hearing is still pretty good. I am talking about the very high pitched flyback noise made by all CRT televisions. It is a very faint sound that travels very far. I know I can still hear it very well. But my father could not hear it. I am guessing this ringtone is something like that.
I know I can't hear that sound any longer (Tinnitus from loud noise's) But I do remember hearing that sound that your talking about. Guess this ringtone is not a good thing for teachers & the original plan backfired to make it keep kids away.
How about the noise from a camera flash when it is charging? I can still hear that one. Anyway, I created this "teen buzz" in my computer just now based on information I read from another article. They say it ranges from 18Khz to 20Khz. I can barely hear the 20Khz end, but I can definitely hear the lower end from 18Khz to 19Khz much better. My Motorola reproduces it just fine. Now, if there's a TV set turned on nearby they I will confuse both sounds so I probably would not know my phone is ringing with this "teen buzz" if a TV was on nearby. But that's just a guess. I have to give it a try. One thing I did notice is that when the speaker is against clothing, such as when the phone is in a pocket, most high frequencies are absorbed so I would not be able to hear the 18Khz if my phone is in my pocket or over my bed, because the high frequencies are absorbed. I wonder if my nephew would still be able to hear that.
I have tinnitus as well (My whole life), but I cannot stand the sound of a computer monitor, TV on a blank channel & such. What I cannot hear is low frequency sound. What I absolutely hate is a woman with a soft voice on the phone. I can almost never hear them, even when they try to speak up for me. Does anyone have a link to download this and we can see if we can hear it? -Jay
Try this one I made. It's got 4 tones of 2 seconds each at 16Khz, 17Khz, 18Khz, 19Khz with 1 second pauses in between. I can hear all of them but the 19Khz is hard to hear for me. I guess that's where my range ends. Of course, you have to have good speakers in your computer or else you will just hear popping sounds instead. Any computer headset can easily reproduce the tones so you can hear them even if you are not wearing them. Just a word of caution: It's a little tricky to reproduce these sounds correctly. If you play it with Windows Media, make sure you disable the equalizer and any other sound enhancements you have in your computer, or if you use another player make sure to disable all equalizers and sound enhancements. Flatten any equalizers or tone controls you may have in your sound card control panel. In other words, put them all in their middle setting. Otherwise, chances are you will hear a different buzz caused by distortion. Don't raise the volume to the max. It all depends on your hardware.
Me too! I've never had a problem hearing extemely high pitch sounds. Which is surprising since I've had ear problems since I was little. I spent 4 days as a child in a oxygen tent at the hospital due to extreme sickness with my constant ear infections. good thing I don't remember. When I work on refurbishing pinballs and such I hear high pitch electrical hums and sounds too. I'm always to my husband...like ...I hear this .... (he doesn't hear it)... I'm probably hearing things that aren't there! :browani: but then again I have heard things that were stopped in time before they fried.
I find this funny if these kids dont want people hearing when they get a call or message why not put your phone on vibrate??
Because vibrate mode makes a louder sound. That's the whole point. I'm sure you've heard the hum it makes. But what I find funny is that how do they answer a phone call and expect the teacher not to hear when they are talking?
Thanks Bobolito. I could hear all of them, the last was a little difficult to hear, but that could be the speaker on my phone too. -Jay
If I am not mistaken the Motorola loudspeaker is capable of reproducing up to 22Khz which goes beyond the human hearing range. But when we get closer to 20Khz and above most of the times what we hear is a mild hiss plus some poping sound and not the actual tone itself. I hope you are not getting them mixed up. Now you should try listening to the tones in a more realistic situation, such as while driving a car or when your air conditioner is running nearby while your phone is inside your pocket and see if you can still hear it.
I downloaded and played it on my iPAQ, not any Motos. I'll give it a try on my other phones ad report back. -Jay
This is wierd.... I can hear all of them clearly but the second one, 17khz. There is only a slight noise, is it pretty apparent when you get to that one? Or is it just really more quiet then the others? Otherwise I have a strange gap in my hearing range few minutes later..... Ok, ok....I just played it back with the eq off, now I hear it but it is much quieter then the rest and higher pitched. Everyone else get the same thing? Just want to make sure I'm not crazy....lol
I tried sending it to my Motos, but they are rejecting the pairing. Whenever I've sent files via BT between Motos I always use passkey 0000. What passkey does an iPAQ use? Thanks, Jay
I played the link http://graphics.nytimes.com/packages/audio/nyregion/20060610_RINGTONE.mp3 for my dd - she said it buzzes like a mosquito. I couldn't hear it until after I turned it up, then turned it back down. I am always annoyed by the buzz of older TVs when you first turn them on.
This is good one! as far as a constant buzz. I hear it immediately. I have the speakers on my computer at normal volume to hear incoming alerts and such from messenger. It says it's a 10 second clip....but the actual high pitch quits about 9 seconds right before it switches to the 10 second mark. I'm going to transfer this one to my phone and try it out...see if anyone else can hear this! ha ha ha I'm not a kid..but I'm going to have a fun time!:browani: Perhaps I'll torture my step-dad for Father's day a little:browani: :lmao: So question..does anyone know what the age is when you supposedly can't hear high pitch anymore???? I'll be 29 in October...so it's not like I'm a spring chicken . :lmao: But I'm not 16.... and I can hear these perfectly. But like I said I have always been very very "sensitive" to high pitch items since I was little.
I don't know. I'll be 35 in 2 weeks and I can hear it, but my range of hearing is off... I can't hear low frequency that well, but high is easy. Made for an interesting stereo setup in my old pickup truck. I put a 360 watt Alpine stereo in it with a CD changer. I think the stereo was worth more than the truck, but I had to really enhance the bass so I could hear it, and the high notes had to be really good too because that's mostly what I hear. It really annoys me to hear these custom stereos that are all bass, and no highs, they sound incomplete to me. -Jay
No kidding. I'm so tired of these little kids running around in Portland that think it's cool with their bass booming. I'm like hello..it doesn't even sound good! What I really hate is we have some punk coming by to a house behind ours and he leaves his damm radio going at full blast, while he's inside the house for 30 minutes to a hour. It's quite annoying and I've yelled a few times at them. This guy is a visitor..he doesn't live there and he needs to have some respect for those around him. On the streets or whatever...I don't care. I LOVE MUSIC!!... but in a residential area at 10:30 to 2 am in the mornig is ridiculous! and just plain rude! Okay I'll calm down now...
I just tried them on my computer, and the last one was also harder to hear. I did have to have the volume on my speakers at close to full volume to hear them, otherwise i just heard the initial pop sound.
Yeah, If its loud after 10:00 pm I'd call the cops. Especially if you know he'll leave the car there for 30 minutes to an hour it will give the cops pleanty of time to come. Once he gets a ticket I don't think you will have any problems afterward. -Jay
Yeah we have... it's been documented and a cop is dealing with this. It's a complex behind our house...and most of the people I think are on housing. I know that the cops are on the landlord and the state funding any everything is involved. I know we are not the only people complaining. All the houses on our side of the street are complaining because it's like a driveway alley behind our property lines with apartments on the back side.... I have nothing against anyone that has housing, but you would think that since they are getting help they wouldn't be stupid and go out of their way to get complaints and definately would not let "friends" who are visiting cause problems. oh well .... i've done what I can..except for literally pulling out a gun and scaring the crap out of them!
you sound like my neighbor! He hears his dog bark, or a car driving up our lane at 3am & he's out the door, naked, carrying a pistol. Good thing there are only a few houses in our area... he's a riot. And a former Pride Fighter - he's not scared of anyone - and he's protecting his family & friends. :lol
IT WAS a JOKE! about the gun..... I actually have kept my mouth shut quite a few times ...but I think after two years of this I have the right to finally speak up. If you were in same position you probably would've done it a lot sooner than I have. I'm always the last one to complain. But I have to tell you if I did say the gun thing on the phone...I bet ya the cops would be here a heck of a lot faster!:browani:
