    Hi all,

    Has anyone noticed the same:

I bought a V710 in Aug from RadioShack. It of course had 1.30.8f firmware.

the section where I keep my names and #'s was called "phonebook" and the icon for the web was a door to a little globe.

I upgraded this V710 to 1.02.SD, and used it for a while this way. No change in the word phonebook or the icon. Later, of course, the phone crapped out on me, so I downgraded to 1.40.0R, and there was little change, but there was still "phonebook" and the door to a globe icon.

I replaced my v710 yesterday. It shows that it has 1.40.0R firmware. Strangely enough, everywhere there was "phonebook" before is now "contacts" and the web icon is the openwave swirl.

This makes me think that one of two things is going on:

    1. Firmware upgrades do not indeed rewrite all of the operating system of the phone.

    2. 1.40.0R that superdavex used was not this current, shipping version of 1.40.0R. Possible reasons are crappy naming conventions, or perhaps an effort to confuse the "v710 hacking" community into thinking this newest release is not really new.

Has anyone else had this experience?

I went through the same evolution of software that you did however, when I got my phone flashed to the 1.40.OR firmware, that is when I noticed those changes. So with old firmware and SD firmware no changes but with new firmware saw those changes. Not sure why the first time they flashed your phone you didn't see those changes?

    Just to make things interesting...

I'm running 1.30.8F on my V710 (replaced in...December, I think...for the camera issue) - the actual phonebook screen says "phonebook", but the home screen smart button tip says "contacts".

At least for over the air upgrades, it does a binary difference. This saves air time, bandwidth, is quicker, etc. Now if the flash at the store is different, I have no idea.

I flashed mine with a Moto cable, and PST 7.1.1. Never over-the-air.

so the difference is between flashes at home, and phones coming back from Moto, that VZW is replacing defective ones with. (hanging participle, yikes, sorry) ;)

I just got my phone replaced with or1.40. I have "Contacts". When I put my numbers in different catagories, I can't see the catagories change with * and # like in my old phone. They all are titled contacts. Do you have this proplem?

I upgraded to 0R myself. Home screen smart button says CONTACTS. When I go the main menu, it says Phonebook.

I think that proves that there is something in the phone we are NOT hitting with these flash updates. I really do think that there is something fishy with the architechture of this phone.

If only a Motorola R&D guy/girl read these forums...............

even a block diagram of the architechture would be nice.

Ok this is screwed up: I cannot get to Mobile web Sessions (The session edit section) via the menu or anything anymore. It's not that I can't add or delete sessions... its that the menu is not there!! I flashed from 40OR to SD 02, and still no change.

I am going to try and swap this thing out AGAIN, due to the clip failing, but we'll see. If the new 710 also has this limitation.... grrr.
