Hurray! Today in one of our lecture halls I recieved a text while roaming. (I think it was roaming, or in the 2.5 seconds between my phone rang and i opened it up it switched from sprint to verizon) this is good news.

Great. Now all we need is an improved picturemail system so we don't have to use the web to view pics.

Fat chance. With all the new phones waht are capable of multi megapixel shots, isnt that way over the head of MMS?

What i would really like is to be able to SEND a text while roaming, but my Sanyo dosent even attempt that.

Which Sanyo are you using? I hear the new Sanyos all have text sending while roaming capabilities.

By the way my LG 225 won't attempt to send a text while roaming. It saves it in the outbox for when Sprint signal returns. :(

Since we are the subject of roaming I have a question about all the new phones coming out at Sprint that are digital only.

If I am in a roaming area, as I am this week, and I have a digital only phone and digital exists (Alltel) will my Sprint phone allow me to roam on that digital signal?

Some background, currently I have a Sanyo 7300 and as people have commented on the Analog is going non-existent. I visit family for about 3 to 4 weeks out of every year in the UP of Michigan and for the past 2 years my trimode phones have worked on analog but worse and worse it seems each time I come here. Occasionally however I have seen flashes of digital pop up on my phone and I believe digital Alltel, new to the area, is finally in place. My father has USCC and my brother-in-law has Verizon and they both believe that they have used digital roaming while up here in the UP I just haven't been in the same place with them to verify it.

So that's my big question. Should I bite the bullet and just buy a new digital only phone and force the issue on roaming so that I can only use digital or will Sprint not allow me to roam digital in such a remote market?

I would bite the bullet and go for a digital only phone. Analog is almost useless now a days. The new digital only phones allow you to force digital roam as well.

Useful to me, but maybe i'm a Luddite! All I want to do is have the ability to talk from many different and remote locations.

Thanks Yankee. Well I was leaning towards going all digital I just hope I am right and Alltel does have a decent digital signal in the UP of Michigan. Right now I have to stand on the third floor of my father in laws house and hold the phone a certain way to talk clearly on analog but I do know that within the last year Alltel put up a tower about 5 miles away so it should be enough to pull in a usable digital signal. Maybe when I get back from this week up here I will get a 900 or 920 or whatever is out and try it out at Christmas when I am back up here. Thanks again for the input.

The follow up question is does anybody have experience with digital only roaming? Is it just like being on a native Sprint signal and works well?

Digital roam is just like using a Sprint signal. It will sound as clear as sprint. The only downside of digital roam over a native sprint signal is that you can not use vision or send a text message.

thanks again. I'll check back in on this subject when I get myself upgraded and I can test the waters of digital roaming.

Well that seals the deal. My brother-in law is sitting next to me with a USCC phone and he has 1 bar of digital 1X and mine only picks up analog. So my next step is to get a digital only phone where I can force digital roam.

Most of the newer phones (ie. Sanyo 8300) have a new 'roaming' setting instead of the old 'analog' in which the phone will typically favor digital roaming. However the LG's do not allow for forced digital roaming as they have mistakenly re-labeled the 'analog only' as the new 'roaming' setting.

I'm coming into this discussion late, but I cannot send or receive text messages while roaming on Alltel around Phoenix.

Interesting. I would have figured that Alltel & Sprint would have it working.

You would think Sprint would release a software fix for this problem but no it's not going to happen.

ya it's definitely goofy in central nebraska. while on digital roam (alltel) i can never send text messages, but sometimes receive them. sometimes i will get the same text message over and over until i get back into sprint area.

Well since I posted that message about SMS on Alltel in PHX things have changed. I can send (whether the other party always receives the message I am not sure, lol) and receive SMS on Alltel digital. Like the previous poster, I will sometimes get the same messages over and over again while roaming. I'm glad I have unlimited SMS!

I have an LG225 that cannot SMS when roaming. I've tried the software update many times since I first got the phone, and it always says no update is available. Since mine's over a year old I wonder if it's "lying" to me.

I had the same problem with my LG225. The OTA software update function never worked after the initial update to V09. What firmware version do you have? You have to take the phone into a store to get the V12 update (which by the way does not fix the SMS not working while roaming bug). None of the current or older LG's allow SMS while roaming and there are no plans to ever fix it.
