i did'nt know text messaging does not work in CDMA
when roaming until this was posted.
Text Messaging works when roaming in GSM since day 1,
    even When roaming Internationally.

I hear you but rather than trying to play a guessing game I decided to just get an LG since those have the FOTA enabled and working.

If you have ever roamed on carriers like C1, Alltel, USCC and others with your Verizon phone you would know that SMS works while roaming on CDMA...

the weirdest thing happened the other night. i was traveling in western iowa with my phone set to "roaming only". i was notified that i had 2 text messages after being on roam for several hours. 1 was from several hours into roaming and the other was from a few hours into roaming. i instantly tried to send a text, but it failed saying that the service was unavailable. i had the guy next to me send me a text message (he uses verizon) and i didn't get it until later when i was in sprint service and i changed my phone to "sprint only".

thought it was odd when i haven't been able to send/receive text messages while roaming.

Sounds like they're working on it at least. It's been working fine here in Los Angeles.

I haven't really checked exactly but I roam on either US Cellular or Verizon with my Sprint phone and I can receive text messages only while using one of the two, not both. However, I've never bothered to check which is which since my stupid LG won't let me send while roaming anyway.

Where roaming is really not necessary unless you go outside the metro in some areas.

True. But I was actually referring to areas outside of the city such as in the mountains where the Sprint signal might disappear. The LA market is pretty large and includeds deserts and mountains as well.

This mountain community in which Verizon roaming occurs will soon have Sprint Nextel service. It is the only place that I frequent in which I roam. The highway approaching this community is actually covered more completely (although not nearly totally) than other carriers.

Could the newfound roaming SMS be related to the ability to reply to IMs sent from AIM to the cell # that I could not do in the past with Sprint?

Can you reply directly to AIM messages now without going on the web first? I still can't.

I have received responses from people in California (texas number) and Pennsylvania (PA number) when I sent an IM to their cell numbers. Both Sprint users..

Well yeah anyone with Sprint can respond to an AIm on their phone if they use the web to view the message. But I was asking about replying directly to the message without having to sign on to the web.

AIM messaing direct reply still doesn't work. I still have to use the web to reply to an AIM message.

I just sent an IM to my phone, and i got this message back
"Auto response from +1516967xxxx: Your IM has been sent to my mobile device. When I receive it, I will be able to reply. Thanks for your IM!"

That is to my Sprint phone. The only problem is that i never got the IM. Hmm

Too bad USCC is the preferred roaming partner over Verizon.

Never thin that a new software version will fix the most annoying thing wrong with a phone because it rarely ever does. lol
