Ok so maybe its a little unfair to "pick" on Sprint by using the USB cable and phone to my laptop to play with Vision, but I took what my customer service rep said last night semi-seriously. He was actually really cool and refunded the unused portion of my PCS to PCS calling, and he got into a spiel about how cool the USB cable is with the phone but that sprint discontinued it to sell the PCS Connection card and unlimited Vision for 99.99 a month. When I said ohh thats cool about the cable (acting like I didnt know what the hell he was talking about). He said "but if you do it dont go to town with it,if you start using up hundreds of hours, you will get a letter from sprint asking you to switch services". Now im sure he didnt mean hundreds of hours either, probably in the teens or twenties, but as I sit here and type this at pizza hut haha,I have to wonder, and I DONT want to lose my awesome new toy called vision. Does anyone know whether Vision is truly a monitored service,and/or have you been kicked off or repriced? I love the Sanyo 4900 and I love Vision even more,it works seemlessly with my IBM T23 Thinkpad, just dont want to get a surprise on my bill!

I wouldn't feel bad about using vision as a modem. The standard vision on my phone SU@&S and sprint dosn't mind charging for it. Sprint want's you to have just enough access to the web to buy lots of toys and get your phone bill back up to big numbers. Sprint has to find a way to gouge more money out of a saturated market and vision is it. Just think about how many people will get vision just to use it as high tech jewelry. It was never meant to be used it was meant to be ornamental.

Well I mean I dont feel bad in a sense that I feel like its dishonest or Sprint isnt already raping me on every fee they can,but in the sense that I commend them for being one of the first to make their 3G highway an unlimited usage portal instead of the per MB usage so many carriers still do,and that I feel that by "abusing" it this way they will just turn around and take it away because of the specific way I am using it.

Oh well... you are mostly right but we shall see what happens I guess.

The problem isn't how long you're online, but how much data you download. I'm sure that Sprint has a MB level that triggers an audit of the account. If they see anything like downloading a windows programme, kazza, websites that aren't compatable with phones, they will probably send a letter or monitor your account very closely the next month. Sprint doesn't have its head up. . . Their house is in order. You would probably fall through the cracks with any other company because they have larger problems to deal with (like ATT/Cingular's conversion to GSM or Verizon's plans over all digital phones/getting a unified billing system/etc). Be careful. You wouldn't want Sprint to cancel your contract and force you to pay the termination fee. They would probably just let you switch plans, but. . .

You hit this one. It's not hard to tell teh difference between KBs of usage that a phone could do at any gives time and the bursts of MBs that laptops could use. The bottom line is exactly what northform said: don't use Vision as a primary ISP! At least not as the $10 add-on. It's good for leisurely use, but not as an everyday thing.

The Sprint contract and promo material says:

    PROMOTIONS, OPTIONS AND OTHER PROVISIONS
Unlimited PCS Vision. Sprint may deny or terminate service without notice where use is in connection with server devices or host computer applications, other systems that drive continuous heavy traffic or data sessions, or as substitutes for private lines or frame relay connections. Unlimited PCS Vision offer for PCS Free & Clear Plans with Vision is: (a) only available with a Vision capable PCS Phone or PCS smart phone device; and (b) not available with Connection Cards, Aircards, or any other device used in connection with a computer or PDA - including phones, smart phones or other devices used with connection kits or similar phone-to-computer/PDA accessories. Sprint reserves the right to deny or to terminate service without notice for misuse.

Read the next to last sentence. It's pretty clear that they have "officially" banned any use of the phone as a modem to another device. Whether or not they enforce it is I suppose another matter. Just for kicks I tried it for 5 minutes the other day at home, it worked like a charm on my 4900, the USB cable, and Smartdial. My computer said I was getting 115K. I had quickly downloded almost a meg in that time just surfing a few pages, so I got leary and stopped. I don't want to lose my unlimited Vision, either.

It dosn't matter to me if they do cut me off. If I can't get my pda up and running on vision by the time my free period runs out I'll quit. The service ( if you can call it that ) I have thru my phone is worth exactly what I'm paying for it: NOTHING. I don't need it at home, I have wireless dsl.
