Texters beware: Sprint Nextel ups per-message fee to 15 cents Sprint Nextel Corp. raised the price it charges users to send a text message to 15 cents, up from a previous price of 10 cents. The carrier also added a cent to the cost of “casual” data usage, increasing the per-kilobyte price from 2 cents to 3 cents. Sprint Nextel implemented the price increase Oct. 1, and warned customers of the change in August and September billing statements. Most wireless carriers charge subscribers 10 cents to send a text message. Sprint Nextel said the price increases will only affect customers without a text-messaging or data plan. The carrier offers various unlimited data plans, and its text messaging plans range from $5 for 300 text messages per month to $15 for unlimited messages. Overage charges for text message plans also did not change; if subscribers on text-messaging plans go over their allotted message limit, they must pay 10 cents per message. Sprint Nextel did not say whether the pricing changes would affect the terms of its early termination fee; however, some Internet users said they were able to cancel their Sprint Nextel service contracts without incurring termination fees due to the pricing changes. Most wireless carriers charge postpaid customers a fee if they want to cancel their service contract, although those fees can be waved if service prices change. Sprint Nextel officials did not offer a reason for the pricing changes http://www.rcrnews.com/news.cms?newsId=27491
I sure hope not, If they start going in this direction I will have to see if they will allow me to disable sending SMS for my daughters. At least on the plans it's not changed though, if they did it to them I could see a big problem.
ehh 15 a month for unlimited isn't bad, this is coming from a Cingular user who is spending 20 bux for 3000 messages a month, which I nearly went over the first month I had.
I agree for 15.00 a Month for unlimited it's not a bad deal. That's what I like about the unlimited incoming SMS from Blue, I only have to worry about going over 1000 outgoing.
Oh Btw, that brings me to an important point. In another post we were talking about free incoming minutes and free incoming text's and that no carrier here in the states was doing that. I found a carrier that does, Centennial Blue (GSM) if someone can point that thread out to me, I'll post there.
Wow, It must be nice to get unlimited everything for free. But for those of us that don't have these abilities, I wouldn't mind $10.00 a month for unlimited sms, mms & data, I wouldn't have to worry about my daughters usage & much higher unexpected bills.
Yeah, if you work for Cingular, you get everything unlimited for free. The same thing with Sprint. But I don't work for them so I have to pay.
Oh yeah let's complain about paying $10 for unlimited...Come on, lol. How did you get that anyways??? Inside connections, like larry has with Sprint I assume.
I think I take the cake. Included with my plan is the grandfathered Pictures Pack from sprint, which now gives me Unlimited data (and tethering, if you play your cards correctly), unlimited text, $5 download credit per month.
Man you guys are making me jealous. I guess I don't have it off that bad though cause I pay $10 every month and get Unlimited IN Text/pix/flix plus 500 additional messages to other users. I use about 4000 Text/Pix/FLIX per month and never went over.
Sprint Policies Give Subscribers An Out Sprint Policies Give Subscribers An Out Today, 12:32 PM source: PCS Intel / Sprint Locking Lawsuit Sprint last week raised the price of a text message for subscribers who do not have a messaging or data plan from 10 to 15 cents. Since this is viewed as a material change in Sprint's pricing, customers who have not paid a bill since October 1 can cancel their account in the next 30 days without being charged an early termination fee. Separately, a class action suit has been filed in California against Sprint for locking their handsets. Although an unlocked Sprint handset would honestly not work with any other national carrier's network, a judge has agreed to hear the case and given it class action status. Should Sprint lose, California subscriber who did not ask to be exempt could be given an option to leave Sprint without paying a fee and / or other compensation. http://www.phonescoop.com/
I wonder how true this is & if so how is it going to effect Sprint's 4th Qtr numbers? Sprint SMS Rate Hike Causes ETF Confusion As of October 1, Sprint raised pay-per-use text messaging rates to $.15 per message. Some see this as a material change to services provided, since unlike 411, a customer cannot use an alternative service. As such, if it is a material change, customers can be released from their contract within 30 days. However, Sprint has not commented on as to if this is a material change of services provided. CBS 13 in Sacramento claims they have found an answer. According to their reporting, the change is indeed material, and customers can cancel ETF-free within 30 days (providing they do not pay a bill after October 1, which would be an acceptance of the plan change). cbs13.com - Sprint Rate Hike Means Penalty-Free Cancellation Discuss In Our Forums Update: PCS Intel has independently verified that Sprint will cancel accounts, and waive the Early Termination Fee for this. We successfully canceled a Sprint account ETF-free when contacting customer care. http://www.pcsintel.com/content/view/1547/9/
Actually, no connections are needed. Just a loophole anyone can take advantage of. By the way, after the news came out that you can get out of your Sprint contract after this rate hike, I've been reading so many threads of people wanting to leave Sprint, its crazy! Seriously, is it that bad? (by the way, the threads are not here in WA).
The same was done when TM introduced the 86 cent per month regulatory surcharge a few years back and this year when TM raised SMS prices from a nickel to a dime. IMO if you're gonna complaing about that then you're just looking for a reason to leave, and you're probably better off leaving your current carrier.
I agree, since the people who use text messaging on a regular basis already know to have a plan, (let's see 400 messages or 40 for the same price a month, kinda a no brainer) those on prepay are the ones who will be hit by this, and those people don't have a contract to worry about.
Me too! Thanks Sprint! No it is not that bad. I am sure if Cingular made some change where people could get out of their contract without paying an ETF they would. I think the same would happen with any carrier. Now is everyone's chance to switch and get a fancy new phone from someone else for cheap!
You're right about that. Every time Cingular changed something, like the Early Nights fee, everyone runs to post to see if they can get out of their contract. But I've never seen such urge to get out of a contract in large quantities as this time with Sprint.
Yesterday I actually tried to weasel my way into a new activation by telling some customers they can get new phones if they port over there number to cingular. Unfortunately I discovered that it only constitutes a material change if they didn't have a text messaging plan or vision plan AND have used either/or 60 days earlier. why can old people text?? o well.
