So... it seems as of lately Sprint has picked up the ball. 1) They will be releasing their "Xohm" (Sprint's brand of WiMax) service in 2008. 2) Sprint will release QChat in 2008 under the branding name of "Nextel Direct Connect" 3) Sprint is offering the "Airave" which is a device that allows to make calls to/fro your house via a repeater (and allegedly via WiFi as well). Now... as I see it the "Xohm" service will relieve congestion (if any) on Sprint network. Getting all those PC card users from their current EvDo, to using the WiMax network for their data/laptops/PCs. Also the branding of the QChat as "Nextel Direct Connect" is a brilliant idea - as so many people know that a 'Nextel' or 'Direct Connect' is a walkie-talkie. And the Airave will help many people with indoor signal issues - as well as having the ability to make calls via WiFi (hopefully not using plan minutes). I think Sprint is starting to "Sprint Ahead" if ya know what I mean! And their new advertising campaign is good... I like the "Sprint Ahead" as that seems to be what they are doing as of lately. What are your comments/thoughts on this? Any official websites for this - for now all I have are some press releases. Wimax will be interesting to see. All the new and faster data products coming out are interesting, because, really, if they are built out well and priced well, they could give DSL and cable providers are run for their money and customers. Hell, I'd go for a wireless broadband solution if it were fast, reliable, and well priced.
Sprint has alot of balls in the air right now, but I think things are looking up for them. The WiMax additions are now competing for physical cell site space with the project to add CDMA to iDEN sites. WiMax will probably end up getting preference in most cases, so hopefully WiMax works out well for them. It's especially tough at CDMA sites because they are so small - usually a platform with room for only 4 or 5 cabinets and little two-pipe antenna mounts. The existing Nextel sites will be very useful for the WiMax project because they usually have more room for equipment and antennas.
WiMax looks great but I wish they could call it something better than XOHM. I am very picky about names and XOHM? Come on. On a similar note, I am glad to see PTT will be called Nextel Direct Connect. Naming it Walkie Talkie was the dumbest thing ever. What was wrong with Direct Connect? Sprint was advertising Direct Connect as the 'Walkie Talkie feature'. It sounded like a cheap toy instead of useful way to communicate used by many people and businesses. I am very happy to hear about the renaming. Sprint is trying to improve and as long as that continues I can't complain too much. As I sit here watching my 3 Sprint phones bounce between 0 and 1 bar of service, I wonder why I am not filled with anger at the so-so provider. For some reason I find it hard to dislike the company. I know I would be more miserable with another carrier so I have stayed with Sprint. Now they are adding WiMax which is excellent. Meanwhile I am still hoping for better voice coverage. Oh Well. Sprint is trying to improve so that is encouraging I suppose.
