I do a lot of work for a large defense contractor who recently banned all camera phones at their sites. Therefore I must give up my Sanyo MM-7400 (DAMN) and get another (non-camera) phone.

I really hate to see the MM-7400 go.... It's the best cell phone I have ever had.... From any carrier.

I am considering a Sanyo VI-2300 and a Samsung RL-A760. I have historically loved Sanyos (4700, 4900, 8100, 4920) but LOVE the audio call quality of my daughter's PM-A740 (which, too, has a camera)

Sanyos really hold a signal well, Samsungs seem to have better audio call clarity. (The Sanyo MM-7400 did Both well... Damn)

    Any thoughts?

I would take a look at the LG 125. It's reasonably priced, very compact in size, internal antenna, good earpiece voice quality and external display.

Interesting... In days past, LGs were notoriously HORRIBLE at holding a signal. They are also promoting the fact that the LG 125 has an "Internal Antenna." Usually this means that the carrier doesn't want to bother with repairing the few (dozens/hundreds) of antennas which are damaged by users.

On the other hand, I rarely yank out my antenna on my Sanyo. Sprint's coverage has been built out to the point where deploying the antenna is rarely necessary.

Have LGs improved? Can they hold a candle to Sanyos?

I've been reading good reviews about the LG 125. Yes in the past some of the LG's haven't had great reputations but this one 'appears' to be a good one. If you're not in a very weak signal area I don't think the internal antenna will matter any.

    Sanyo 200. Cheap, basic phone.

BTW, mes, I also work for a "large defense contractor" who also banned cameras (and camera phones) a looong time ago. But! They also have a camera exemption you can apply for as long as your management signs off on it.

You might check with HR/Security and see if such an exemption exists for your corp?

    Luck.

Thanks, but I tried that. I had a camera permit for a year when I was packing a Sanyo 8100, but when I acquired the MM-7400 this company got the Security department personally involved. My manager signed off but the Security Focal denied it.

I would be interested in the Sanyo 200 if it were a Vision phone, but that is not the case.

    Thanks for your thoughts.

The VI-125 has a few quirks, but what phone does not? I have read nothing but good things from users so far in terms of its phone functionality, including RF. I am also considering the VI-2300.

    How about the Sanyo RL-4920
It got fairly decent reviews. and it has a pretty long battery life. I think it's a vision phone. no camera. just a thought. Good luck to you in your decision.

The 4920 is kind of getting old and outdated but still worth considering if you don't need a flip. The only problem I've heard about on some of the 4920's is the keypad.

Thanks Guys! I am actually looking seriously at the Sanyo 4920. I had a 4900 for a long time... Good phone but muffled sound thru the earpiece. Damned good reception, though.

My wife has a 4920 and I've been very impressed with its battery life, reception AND call quality.

What is the problem with the keypad? Do they misfunction or fail? Something else?

    Thanks in advance,

Some of the keypads have defective buttons where a certain key will not respond when pressed. It's almost as though the keypad is too wide for the phone.

    Thanks for your input, folks.

I went with the Sanyo RL-4920. Nice little unit. Good call quality. Superb reception. Looooong battery life. Nice all-around high-quality unit.

Tell you what, though. If the Company loosens up and allows cell phone cameras, I'll move that Sanyo MM-7400 back to my number. THAT is a REALLY nice phone.

Guess I'd rather have a new phone rather than a new job. (Getting busted out of an aerospace company on a security violation does not bode well for a person's long-term employment prospects.)

    Thanks again!

I also need a phone without a camera. I'm considering the Motorola v60v. It's a little old school but I've had a v60 before and it was great. It took a lickin' and kept on tickin'. I can't say that for the numerous Sanyos that I've destroyed despite handling them more gently. I hated my Sanyo 8100 and 8200. Too fragile and I found the call quality was very poor.

Glad to hear you went with the 4920. I thought it looked like a pretty good phone for Sprint from what I had read and heard about it. And yes ..... not losing the job is important... especially not over a phone :browani:

Have fun playing with the new phone :)

Yes the sound quality is poor on the Sanyo 8100 & 8200 series. Hopefully the 8300 will be better.

So did they fix the sound on the 4920? The one I had was good on level 1 or 2, but after that it was useless. :(

Not sure about the sound but they did fix the echo problem on a software update.

Hmm... May be the bad distortion I was experiencing was the echo problem. It was a good little phone over all.

I am finding that the 4920 has better sound quality than most Sanyos. WAY better than the old 4900. Comparable to the MM-7400.

I agree the earpiece on the 4920 is much better than that of the 8200/7300 series.

So what made you choose the 4920 over the VI-2300? I'm considering one of these two to replace my 4900. The 4900 had amazing reception but I really hate the muffled sound as well as an apparent "delay." And now the battery is just not lasting like it used to.

    Thanks.

FWIW, I also have a 4900 and am considering the VI-2300. I like the roam options on the 2300, and ever so slightly larger screen (I know, still small).

My wife had the 4920 and it works very well. Some Sanyos in the past have had poor sound quality throught the earpiece. The 4900 was that way and I have heard unflattering things about the 8200.

Since absolutely nobody anywhere has written substantially about the VI-2300 I decided to make the "safe" choice and go with the 4920.

I have personally found the 4920 to be substantially clearer than my old 4900. The signal holding of the 4920 is just superb and battery life is excellent.

The 4920 is a very nice phone. I don't regret my decision at all.

I didn't think the 4900's sound quality was all that bad. The 8200 is worse.

Yea, the 4900 was great sounding for a Sanyo, my 5600 is right up their too. :) But starting from the 5300/8100 the sound quality just started slipping. But Sanyo is going in the right direction again.

Patience, Larry, patience. I was waiting on the champagne for an add a phone, and that just has arrived on the stores. I also prefer green for myself, but I may settle on another color rather than wait for a month ...

    Tom,

I predict that you will end up passing on the 2300 and waiting for something else. ;) Will there ever be a perfect phone? I don't think so. There really hasn't been anything solid in every aspect in a long time.
