In a recent phone conversation with Southern Company's Larry Carlisle I asked about the possible purchase of the Nextell system from Sprint, he said " I can say we are looking into the possibility of purchasing the Nextell system, but only if Sprint is willing to sell the IDEN system, & only if we can reach a price agreement " If this does become reality, it will add to their depth , along with never ending expansion possibilits...Their coverage is all ready one of the largest in the South-East..Alabama - Georgia - Florida - Mississippi Network Coverage from SouthernLINC Wireless

I would love to see an official press release on this (not that i am doubting you) - but to see one company own a vast majority of the iDEN network in the USA would be great!

I hope this really does happen - it would be the best thing for both Sprint, and their iDEN platform. Maybe SouthernLinc can get the Nextel network on par with the quality of their network in the Southeast!

Well IMO this would mean no more of the "Southern" Linc name, because it'll be nationwide,
not just the Deep South :)

I agree though, that Southern acquiring the Nextel network would be in the best interest of both the network and consumers. It will be interesting if any dollar values for Nextel turn up.

I'd really like to see some type of press release on this one.

...Shouldn't this be posted in the news section?

EDIT: Yes, and it is now moved. :)

Southern Linc already roams on Nextel, but Nextel can't roam.
So yes I think this'll be great for both companies.
and Nextel will be freed from Sprint prison. :)

A great example of regional becoming national :)

Re: Southern Company Possibily Looking to Purchase Nextell from Sprint

this would be a huge change, and a huge on taking for southern company. i dont thinkk they have the infrastructure to handle something of this size. this would be more of a renaming (to who knows what) and a joining of assets.

i would guess that more than likely they keep the Nextel name, have ownership of Southern Company, and be maintained, etc by whatever nextel employees/management that they get to have in the buyout agreement.

time to get out the popcorn and watch and see!

Re: Southern Company Possibily Looking to Purchase Nextell from Sprint

my dreams are coming true!!! i always wanted this!!! this was actually part of the plan to get iDEN of Sprint's shoulders without killing competition.......cuz you see XOHM is now in a separate companies hands.......Nextel could be too leaving Sprint to make clear-headed and balanced decisions without trying to balanca iDEN and WiMax as well

Re: Southern Company Possibily Looking to Purchase Nextell from Sprint

I could see Sprint spinning it off but keeping a minority stake in the company similiar to Vodafone and Verizon. There are quite a few synergy sites that will have to be figured out what to do with, but I read somewhere that less than 30% of the Nextel sites have CDMA capabilities. I wish I remember where the heck I saw that.

Well since Sprint and Nextel share cell site equipment and storage bunkers it would be hard to just sell off Nextel. Any potential buyer would have to share cell sites with Sprint including land leasing.

That would be an interesting and more feasible option.

and also the minority stake would be important because what would they do about the brand name Direct Connect if the merger were to go through and SouthernLINC is renames as Nextel.

If this was to happen it's more than likely you'd see the physical network sold off but Sprint retain the Nextel brand for their PTT over CDMA.

Re: Southern Company Possibily Looking to Purchase Nextell from Sprint

Your absolutely right thats why I brought that up. Can you remember seeing the press release about the % of Nextel converted to Synergy? Maybe they can share resourses or just keep the Nextel building that have CDMA and just give a possible buyer the actual equipment. I just thought of this, maybe they could still running the synergy sites with IDen but just have a roaming agreement with Southern. It is hard to stay out of the Backseat CEO position when talking about carriers and buyout speculations.

Yeah, I would merge them all into one monolithic carrier and then make it a non-profit organization!
