The US gets shafted on a cool phone again. Yes, it says that availability dates for NORTH AMERICA will be announced by local markets in the coming months. I guess this it is for sure that the US will not see the Xperia X1 until after September 30th. More: Very impressive credentials, any one care to guess a price?
...ahem...SonyERICSSON...:hellobye: ...maybe if people in the US would start remembering the full name of the company they'll start getting some phones sent their way Roughly $800 without subsidies...
Sorry, I can't help you, I don't work for the aforementioned merged company :dunno: ....however if you're interested in a sleek new RBS 6000 with chrome bumpers and white-wall tires, give me a ring :browani:
Looks quite cool. I like the sideways slider/full keyboard. I like the FM radio. I like the big memory (400 MB on phone + MicroSD). I think it's interesting that they have used MicroSD rather than Memory Stick Micro for this phone. I don't want another memory "standard" at this point (I'm already using SD and MicroSD). Actually, the only issue I have with it is WindowsMobile . I have been a Palm and Blackberry user, and I'm not sure I want another OS. SW
I think Sony is finally realizing they lost them memory card wars to SD. Most new VAIO laptops I've seen have intergrated SonyMemory stick and SD card slots. If SE goes with micro-SD I also see that as a good thing...altho you'll still need a micro-SD to SD adapter to plug it in your computer...or you can just plug your phone directly to a USB port...so maybe the card type isn't that big an issue. But anyway, yea, if all phones used micro-SD and mini USB ports, the world would be just that much easier If you mean pre-merger Ericsson phones, then yes, I agree streight-up Ericsson phones were better than SE. If you mean the mergerd SE, then I think they started off badly in 2001 but have kept on improving, and some of their newer models have been their best to date. The W910i is currently one of the most popular phones in EU at the moment.
I agree, SE had a few hiccups intially but for the last 5-6 years their devices are very high quality and I have no doubt that that the Xperia will carry the same quality and more. I know a few satisfied SE owners, one of them gave up two trials of 3G phones and went back to his old SE and is awaiting release of the new SE for AT&T. I myself have only owned one SE, the unbranded 520a, that phone had one of the best call clarity and reception.
I am very suprised that their is no North America release date on this device. It was/is one of the most antisipated devices to come out this year. And I was drooling all over this device when word got out about it. Their was also a strong indication in the begining that it was going to be picked up for a US release.
I figured you would be. . From my understanding I believe there will be a US release but since the X1 will not have separate European and US hardware versions, the UK model will work well in the US. So there should be importers that will start selling the Xperia X1 to US customers on maybe even September 30? The rumor mill says for a formal US release (possibly even subsidized by a carrier) there should be an announcement on November 3 as to when the it will be in the US. I would want the unbranded version anyway, finaces permitting. The Xperia is smaller than the Blackjack II? Wow this is beginning to get more attractive by the nano second.
It's also quite a buggy phone! Personally I wouldn't touch it and I'm an SE fan. The W595 and the W902 look to be much better, and hopefully will have a lot fewer bugs. The W980 is actually a great handset, but doesn't seem to be catching on as much. As for the X1 it will be around ÂŁ500 (approx $1,000) without subsidies. It will come with a full length film pre-loaded in some markets. The initial information I have heard is that it will be released in the U.S. on AT&T in November, but treat hat last bit of information with a BIG grain of salt. I tend not to focus very much on information about the North American market so I can't confirm that 100%.
I don't think there is much of a market for $1000 devices in the US, no matter how feature packed it is.Also IMHO, SE/AT&T will be making a mistake to offer such an ultra high end phone since someone willing to pay upward of $600, would want an unbranded phone and not one locked to AT&T complete with all their junk. I am pretty sure there are others on this board that would agree with me on this. What is the market like in UK for such an expensive device? just curious
Customers very rarely pay the full price of a handset in the UK. Most handsets are usually free with contract. If the handset is around ÂŁ350 SIM free then one would expect it to be free on an 18 month ÂŁ30-ÂŁ35/month+ contract. In the case of the X1 I imagine it will be free with a ÂŁ50/month+ 18 month contract. It will probably be free on cheaper contracts within six months of release. When the N95 came out it was only free on ÂŁ50-ÂŁ75/month 18 month contracts, but now it's free with a ÂŁ24/month contract.
Sorry I have to disagree with you on that one, my SE W810i is reason enough for me to buy another SE. Even in fringe areas my SE always held a signal and has excellant call quality.
I was drooling for sure, but now that the Touch Diamond is released & the Touch Pro will soon be release for Sprint the drooling has pretty much stopped. Will the 3G work in the US with the Euro X1? I would not spend the extra on a unlocked & unbranded version. This device will be hacked like no other. Their will be a ROM dump of the unbranded version and cleaned out versions of the ROM for you to flash to your device within days of release.
As long as there isn't going to be different hardware versions - it has the 850/1900 UMTS and even 1700 (T-Mo). Or at least that's what they are still reflecting on SE's USA site for the X1. X1 ETA: $1k is certainly steep for me, but it is my perfect phone - other than being WM. It's probably the beautiful analog clock that gets me. LOL!! I've been very happy with my SE (W580i), although I can't give a very well rounded opinion. I've had no problems with it, however; and have enjoyed it enough that I would certainly consider a high-end SE. I only wish Nokia would follow suit.
does not look like this phone will get off the ground in the US except through Sony Style. ATT does not want to take it cause of price.......$549 - $599 retail. No rebates.
That is the going rate on any unsubsidized PDA/smartphone in the US. Even without a rebate the contract price would be $300 to $400, which is easier for businesses or power users to swallow. So if this device dose not show up on a carriers line up, it will more then likely be because of SE can not or will not customize the device to the carrier(s) specs.
Agreed, if I remember right the full retail for my Treo 750 was $549.95 , 7 months after release. Here is the webcast.
I believe it has handled differently in the US. For one thing the subsidized price for a phone does not vary with the contract price. Some phones are free, typically AT&T takes 150-200 off from the full retail price for a 2 year contract. Most Smartphones also have a $50-$100 rebate for signing up with the unlimited data plan. FOLLOW-UP: Sony Ericsson shows and explains the Xperia X1 to Journalists Posted by Arne Hess - at Wednesday, 24.09.08 - 13:39:41 CET If you follow my personal Twitter tweet, you know that I'm currently in Lund, Sweden at Sony Ericsson's HQ where the company hosts a press event today. And hot from the Xperia X1 hands-on session with Magnus Andersson, Senior Product Manager Xperia X1, we got the news, that Spb will release a Spb Shell plug-in for the Xperia X1 panels. For sure, Sony Ericsson wasn't able to comment on how and when Spb Shell for the Xperia X1 will be available but it exists. Also Sony Ericsson confirmed that the Xperia X1 will definitely not have an accelerometer but also confirmed that it will come with 384 MB RAM! Also, Sony Ericsson again confirmed that there will be two Xperia X1 versions, the X1a and the X1i (as mentioned in the X1 white paper) where one is for the North American market and one is for the rest of the world aka Europe and Asia. Quite interesting is the fact that Sony Ericsson declined to comment its partnership which HTC which, as a matter of fact, produces the Xperia X1 but also contributes some Windows Mobile enhancements like the streaming player and other utilities. Last but not least it was confirmed that the Xperia X1 initially will not include Flash Lite 3 support and if Opera Software isn't adding it for Opera Mobile 9.5, there will be no support for Flash-powered websites like YouTube, etc. Cheers ~ Arne Source: So now it seems there will be 2 versions of the 3G. I was so hoping that one device will have all 5 3G frequencies. It is available for Pre-order from Expansys for $949.00. Interestingly their specs still show one device covering all 3G frequencies.
