So who is this for and which one is it?

    Enquiring minds want to know.

    Mimicked, didn't steal

Ahem, I thought my post was clear enough — whichever grabs it first

I don't know which, it's in an elongated box (sorry for upside down image).

Ok, that's settled — apparently the watch was for my wife, although she did try to give it to the daughter first

So someone got an Apple Watch with the Nike sport band? Series 2, I assume.

Was it a work gift or did you win it?

Somebody else won it and I won a gift certificate, but the winner wanted to trade, so I obliged :). I would assume series 2 as well since it was a freshly purchased one and I don't see a Nike sports band bundle with the series 1 in the store.

The box logos gave it away.

She'll like it, I think. I've had mine two years now. Had it replaced under AppleCare once because the charging disk on the back came off, but still attached by the connecting cables. They asked a lot of question about bug sprays, sun lotions and such.

When it was gone for the week, I really missed it more than I thought.

Make sure she sets it up with the 'Activity' native App on her iPhone. And any other health apps ( I use MyPlate by Livestrong) she may have. Also set up with the native Health App.

And rinse it off now and then to get ride of salt sweat and other gunk. It's waterproof for swimming.

Thanks for the tips! I know she uses the Nike running app, not sure about others. She has also indicated she's unlikely to wear it all the time, is that going to be a problem? She keeps thinking it's not the right fashion statement or something like that.

Not wearing is not a problem, it will just not record data for that day. I think many, especially women, feel like she does. But many just buy a fancier band to make a statement. They are easy to change out.

Just don't let her battery run dead and not used for a long time. Turn off completely if she not going to use it...or just keep it on, and attached to the charger. It has a sleeping horizontal display mode, so it acts as a night stand watch.

What can be done with the watch alone, leaving the phone completely behind? Can she go running and expect the app to sync once she gets back?

Yes, she can run without it. Also use Apple Pay. The full list is below in the link. And if in a wifi network, make/receive phone calls. And text messages.

The Series 2 has built in GPS also. So it can track a workout not only from wrist movement but also GPS such as when swimming

Once at the food store I forgot wallet, cash and iPhone. Used watch to pay!

She likes what it does, still hates how it looks :) She got some aftermarket casing in "rose gold" that looked good to her on the site, but looks kinds ugly when on the watch. So it's still a work in progress.

Trade it in for the rose gold, official one, with the pink band. Only $369

I'm not sure how that'll work given I don't have a receipt or anything.

Hmmm. eBay it? Sell it to a Russian friend for profit?

At some point, you'll want to 'own' it with their serial number for warranty service ( one year) anyways.

I tried a smartwatch for a few weeks, at first I liked it, then meh...when the novelty wore off, I stopped wearing it. I don't think I would get another one just yet, I don't think they are really ready for "prime time" just yet. Still needs more intelligence. Some of the high-end ones like Tag Heuer makes could be interesting, but the price tag is kind of prohibitive. I'll check the smartwatch segment again in a few years and see whats out then...

To me the main hurdle is how often you have to charge them. I don't think I'll pay money for one until they get to a reasonable battery life.

I accept the fact that if I'm on a desert island I can't have my iwatch ( Apple Watch) last a few days and that It is even important.

But in normal life it very useful , not necessarily crucial, to have a Watch accessory. And I don't wear a watch while sleeping. So a nightly charge is really very practical.

I love sushi. But I do not expect it to last days either. Or a lot of food for that matter. I eat. Not waiting for long lasting food.

I barely manage the twice a week with my fitbit. I do sleep in it because I prefer the silent alarm as it doesn't wake my wife up.

And unlike sushi, I would expect the watch to survive a lengthy travel without running out of charge, which with the current crop of smart watches is not a given.

It works for my lifestyle. I rarely go to bed with less than 40% charge remaining. Certainly has lasted well for cross country flights coast to coast. Those are infrequent regardless. Whether it lasts one or three days, there is bound to a time that inconvenient to charge if one wears a watch day and night.
But sure, the more charge capacity the better. I was skeptical at first, but nightly charging works very well for me. I agree that I like the silent alarm when I had a Fitbit. But my spouse uses a loud buzzer, so it's no reciprocal

My wife can use a fire alarm for all I care, I always get up earlier than she does :D
