I am inclined to agree with the sentiment that the iPhone isn't the primary cause of higher rates of smartphone adoption. For one thing I think many people are perhaps buying smartphones, not so much because they want a smartphone, but because it has certain features they like e.g. the N95. Furthermore, in Europe at least, smartphone adoption rates were at a good level over a year ago e.g. 19.5% of all handsets sold in Italy during the second half of 2006 were smartphones. and adoption rates have presumably continued to rise since then.
