I'm hoping someone here can convince me one way or another... never owned a sidekick (or smartphone) before. It hasn't been a consideration until recently; I'm definitely in need of a QWERTY phone with email access, but I'm not really feeling the Blackberry thing. Previous iterations of the sidekick always had little problems that prevented me from taking them seriously. But this 2008 is looking pretty good to me, in terms of features and design.

One major concern I have... I've been using unlocked phones for the longest time so I've enjoyed the flexibility you get with that. You can download java apps like Opera Mini and Wattpad - I'm reading that sidekicks generally don't support third-party apps. I'm sure the sidekick's web browser is acceptable, but I would really miss having some sort of e-reader handy...

And yeah, I don't think I'd be too embarrassed being seen using a sidekick in public. I'm still a few years away from 30, that's still acceptable, right?

it does look like a pretty cool device, try it you have a trial period it 14 days if you don't like it return it. The one downfall is tmobile will not unlock a SideKick device for you but I agree it seems like a nice phone, have you thought about the other smartphones like the Dash, I use that one and have for about a year and a half I have been pleased with it.

Nah, no Dash for me. I'd like to avoid Windows Mobile, and c'mon, can you do this with a Dash? I don't think so.

Okay, I'm not actually going to do that. I swear.

But I did pick up the new Sidekick today. It's so new the store didn't even have it out on display yet... but you could ask for it. Haven't gotten a chance to play around with it yet, but so far it looks pretty sweet. And this Moto L71 is really getting buggy on me lately so it's about time for a change.

And I'll be sticking with the all black color scheme. None of those crazy snap-on covers for me.

Nice Bling...LMAO that was the best truly thank you. You know with the covers you can personalize them if you go to the website listed with the covers...can't remember the site right now (hard to concentrate on Friday night or saturday morning i guess) you can upload an image and make the cover anything you want but I like the all black one too. Hope you like it

I was going to announce it but I was gone the day it launched, it's pretty cool though with the covers and all. And it's more affordable that's what I like about it. I will say this that from now on SK will be launched by model year, unless it's a limited edition like the Tony Hawk version.

Hmm, had a weird thing happen with my Sidekick today. The thing spontaneously reset on me - and it wasn't a hardware reset, it was more like a network reset... it was just sitting on my desk, untouched, when suddenly it went to the startup screen. When I could access all the functions again, all my contacts and calendar entries were all gone (but quickly re-populated, since all the info is auto-synced online, as is the case with all Sidekicks). So I didn't lose any important information. I had to re-login to my email accounts, and I also received 5 new text messages (as new) that I had already received a few days ago.

Not a big deal, but the annoying thing was that I lost some of the settings I had customized when I first set the phone up (like ringtone, sound profiles, camera settings) - not everything, but random things here and there. It was definitely strange.

Except for this little hiccup, I'm really happy with the phone...

We had a power outage at a data center today so most data services went out temporarily when the Danger servers were rebooted this happenned to most users that were connected at the time. Sorry you'll see hiccups like this once in a while

Ah. Well, that explains it. Glad to hear it wasn't some sort of malfunction with just my phone. Still, hope it doesn't happen all that often... it's good that the contacts and calendar entries weren't lost, but setting up the phone again from stock is definitely no fun...

Hey Seabass...thanks for sharing re: your Sidekick purchase. I too have been tempted by the new Sidekick-2008. I like it's new smaller size, and the menu seems to be a bit different than the other Sidekick's I've viewed in the store.

I just bought a Samsung Blast in April, and while the phone is OK, the e-mail client that I use with AOL is barely acceptable. Yes, it does push in the initial e-mail, but if the e-mail and/or attachment is large...then the phone re-set's itself. How's the e-mail on the new Sidekick? I actually e-mail more than I text, which on the Blast is OK.

I also like you am not a big fan of Window's mobile devices...I owned a Dash before getting my Blast. I actually like the Blast better than my Dash, even though it appears that I've taken a step back.

Also too is the age factor. You stated if it would still be acceptable for someone a few years away from 30 to use a Sidekick in public...what about a guy like me who just turned "50" this year? :headscrat:dunno::rolleyes: Every phone I've purchased from T-Mobile...1st the Dash, then the Blast, I've always asked myself "should I get a Sidekick"? Then I get something else.

I've considered the Blackberry, but not sure I'd use everything to it's full potential. The Sidekick seems just right! So maybe I'll continue monitoring your's and other's feedback on the new Sidekick...then just go out and buy it...not caring that a 50-year old guy is using a Sidekick! :lmao:

Hey CRC... glad to hear I'm not the only adult who's got a thing for the Sidekick.

The e-mail experience has been pretty good. Keep in mind, I was previously using a third-party java app on a Motorola L71 for email prior to this, so I can't say I have the best perspective. But my sister-in-law also has the Blast - I've gotten the chance to play around with it a bit, and I can't say I'm a big fan of email on that device. Initial setup is easy, but the whole email-through-mms thing is definitely on the slow side, plus the screen doesn't have the resolution to accomodate viewing a whole lot of text at one time. The Sidekick is a huge step up as far as those two factors are concerned (for me, anyway). Plus it has no problems handling large emails and attachments.

It does have its limitations though. For some reason, there's not a whole lot of memory devoted to email, so you have to make sure to keep your inbox tidy to prevent running out of space (or set it up to automatically delete old messages). It doesn't help that only POP email is offered for Yahoo and Gmail... so any activity you do on your Sidekick isn't reflected in your online inbox. And while it can handle .jpg and some (text-based) .pdf attachments, there's no actual document viewer/editor for those and other formats. Although you can purchase an Excel viewer through T-Mobile downloads.

Despite those issues, I've been happy with the email experience. I'm sure WinMo and Blackberry offer a ton more features, but I like the interface and of course the keyboard is a pleasure to use. And I think the styling is a definite improvement - not as teenybopper-ish as previous Sidekicks. It seems like the Blast was aimed at a similar demographic, so hey, if you feel comfortable with that, you shouldn't have any issues with this one... I guess if you get one I can tell my friends to stop calling me "the oldest person to own a Sidekick"...

Got you both beat...I spoke with an 82 year old lady tonight on the phone at work who threatened to cancel if we didn't give her a free sidekick with a two year contract, because she had paid us sixty thousand dollars....that's right $60,000 in the last 4 and a half years I did it for her, I had to ask because of this forum, "Maam who is going to use this sidekick?" she replied, "I am, and I want a Purple skin for it too!" I just about died laughing I told her well I hope you enjoy your new Sidekick. She said oh I will I like to instant message all my boyfriends. Gotta love her.

    Ha!... funny story.

But good lord, what the heck is she doing spending over $1,000/mo. on cell phone service? I hope you told her about T-Mobile @ Home to cut down on her overages. That can't be the most efficient use of her retirement funds.

Sorry for my denseness, but which sidekick on TMo's page is the 2008 one?

It's the first thing you'll see when you go to T-Mobile's home page... it's the one with the customizable shells. Actually this might be easier - here's the link to the product page:

Well, now I'm forced to make a decision, my Blast died today...Blast! :D I was on a call, the phone froze, shut itself off and I can't turn it back on. Tried removing the battery, etc., nothing.

So I'll either get the Sidekick, Blackberry Pearl, or another Blast (I have insurance). I'll let you know! I'm leaning towards the Sidekick...for it has what I need and the monthly cost would be cheaper due to not needing a separate text plan like I would need for the Blackberry...but then again, not sure! Guess I'm still concerned about a 50-year old guy (myself) using a Sidekick! :hmm: :dunno:

Actually, before you make your decision... something caught my eye while on the T-Mobile website today - $9.99/mo. for unlimited email access on the Blackberry Pearl (with a qualifying voice plan, I'm sure). That would at least take care of your cost concerns...

Thanks Seabass! At this time though I had to take current stock of my finances, and things are kinda tight since I just puchased a home. I called T-Mobile, and since I have swapped out 3 previous Samsung Blast's (software problems with the other 3...another thread), they are sending me another phone for nothing...but this time a different model. I'm getting a Moto RIZR Z3, which isn't exactly what I wanted...but it'll do till my contract is up, and by then they'll have other phones to choose from. Guess that Google "Android" phone will be out by the end of the year. Can check that out when it comes.

Till that arrives in 2-3 days, they gave me a "loaner"...and old touch screen Sony-Erickson. Thing weigh's like a brick compared to today's phones! At least I can make/receive calls/texts.

Thanks again for your help and suggestions!

As a long time Sidekick user (full disclosure: I run hiptop3.com) I was impressed by the Sidekick 2008. If you don't already have a Sidekick LX, then you'll likely be happy with it. Especially if you're a heavy texter/IMer as nothing beats the keyboard on the SK.

My husband and I just got two Sidekicks (2008) and are loving them. We left Sprint after fighting with Samsung phones for two years. My first one overheated and started coming unglued. Had another get wet. It worked for a couple days then started adding extra numbers when dialing. I turned it off and on, and when it came back it had a yellow error screen. We both ended up with a900's and HATED them. Bluetooth never worked right. Batteries sucked. Calls dropped with full bars.
So far the Sidekicks have been great. We have so many ways of keeping in touch with each other. IM, text and email... the keyboard is much nicer than other phones We looked at.

And best of all I got an awesome discount through work. Paid $49.99 each. Once we get our $50 (per phone) rebate cards, they'll be free.
