A Canadian man has been shocked to receive a mobile phone bill for nearly $85,000 (£41,000). Piotr Staniaszek thought he could use his new phone as a modem for his computer under his $10 unlimited mobile browser plan from Bell Mobility. He downloaded high-definition movies and other large files unaware that this incurred massive extra charges. Bell Mobility has since lowered the bill to $3,243, but Mr Staniaszek says he intends to fight the charges anyway. More
Wow... even 3.5 Gs is still a lot. That's more than my car cost. He must have downloaded a lot of movies. I'll bet the MPAA comes knocking on his door with a lawsuit soon.
Not thinking is truly the case here. At least Bell Mobility was willing to knock off $82,000!! This guy is lucky he doesn't have to pay the full $85K.
Yeah, he is lucky. His stupidity could have cost him a lot of money...well, it still will cost him a lot of money!
I just wonder if he was born in my area? if not, this area would make the perfect place for him to retire.
LOL, My SO sent that to me at work yesterday. He was in a panic because he said I always play with my phone and it could happen to me also. Uh No! . I wonder if Bell Mobility did lower the bill because somewhere in the fine print it does say that they notify if the charges are higher than normal & failed to in this case. I am with Andy, the man was NOT thinking.
If he's such a movie pirate he should not be messing with the legal system. He's playing with fire and it may cost him more than $80,000 after the MPAA and RIAA catch him. What strikes me as a surprise is who actually has the time and patience to download full length movies over a cell phone connection? Even if it is 3G, that is outrageous! When are these people going to learn that fixed connections are cheaper and faster?
Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows CE; IEMobile 7.6) UP.Link/6.3.0.0.0) Well there is a difference between downloading on to a cellphone vs using a cellphone to connect to the internet to download on to a computer. Per the news the second option is what this person was doing. Downloading HD movies on to a cellphone would be pretty ridiculous in my opinion
The bottom line is he should have asked before teatherling like that. Maybe try something like doing a little teathering and then look at the next month's bill before you start with the heavy downloading.; -Jay
