My internet slowed to a crawl yesterday... when I rebooted the modem, the internet never came back up I visited my Embarq store an I got a replacement modem. Just plugged the thing in the wall and after several minutes of flashing, it finally came back up. I just noticed that this is the first time ever that I have been able to get a clean result from the Speedtest site... with a relatively low ping
Charter recently doubled my speed, from 10-Meg to 20-Meg. I'm still paying the same price. See why I use cable rather than wireless data.
Nice test results... ping isnt bad either. Thank you for putting the pingtest.net results; I didn't know anything about the site, Kyle.
Yup the Pingtest site complements the Speedtest. I get to find out if my connection is steady or crazy (the Jitter). Jitter sometimes does vary by as much as 30ms, but i find it very useful as well, just like measuring for speed. The Asheville, NC pingtest host was taken down recently, it was the fastest for me, but the Atlanta & Albany GA hosts measure ok too.
One thing you have to keep in mind is that with most cable internet, mainly comcast and time warner, is they implement SpeedBoost, which give you a real big boost in speed for the first 15 seconds or the first 20 megabytes (I think those are right) therefore you really won't know what's your real speed unless you do a FTP transfer and wait like a minute or two and then check what's your real speed. Anyways, here's my speed for right now. My college has a beast of a connection I'll post when I get a chance.
Wow! my upload is faster than my download!....LOL! I think my WiFi connection is a bottleneck for me. I've seen my line reach over 25mbps up and down when connected directly to the router via ethernet.
For the time being, I'll be staying with my grandparents in Greenville, SC about 50 miles from my home in Gaffney (I should be taking a computer class here). The internet here is DSL, and 75% slower than our cable connection thru Charter Communications in Gaffney.
Ah ok... the speed test results are a LOT lower when I use http://speedtest.comcast.net ; also, I get different speeds on different Comcast servers vs I think I will conclude that the speed boost isn't used on the Comcast site. Either way, I am beating the CenturyLink DSL speeds.
Comcast Speed Test: Speedtest.Net: DSL reports: As one can see the results vary rather widely... or even wildly
One thing I forgot to say if you want to be real technical on speeds. Speed test sites measure your speed in Mb/s, or Megabits. This number will always seem large. But to find your true speed, which matters since nothing you download is Megabits or Gigabits, but the opposite, Megabytes and Gigabytes, you get your speed and divide by 8. For example: My current speed is 3.18 Mb/s or 3180 kbps. So 3180 divided by 8 is 397.5 kB/s. So my upload would be 900 kb/s divided by 8 which is 112.5 kB/s. I'm assuming because of the distance, that is why your getting the weird results? Try doing a traceroute and see if there's any hops that have a bad result. You might be able to call and have them look at your routing and maybe move you? I remember when I worked for comcast as a internet technician, it depends on the levels your seeing from the node if you'll get a good speed, resting the modem and any routers you may have helps. My speed went up a little after I reset my router, must be from all that downloading, lol.
We had our DSL speed upgraded yesterday. We used to be on the 10 Mbps down/896 Kbps up package. We are now on the CenturyLink 25 Mbps down/2 Mbps up bonded DSL package. Bonded DSL is where they take two lines and "virtually" bond them into one line. The technicians had to install a brand new line in the study where the modem is, install a new interface (that is what they called it) on the side of the house, and put new housing on the box outside since they told us the new equipment is too big for the old box housing. This new plan is also not available to everyone yet. In fact if you look up my zip code on the company's website, it will show the highest available in my area is 10 Mbps. But I found out how to get it early before they release it to the launch areas (including my city) that can support it, since it is currently in the final stages of testing in different markets. I am in the other side of the house on Wi-Fi right now.
That's nice... I liked CenturyLink, but all I could get up in Tallahassee was 3Mb/640. I went to the CenturyLink site to see whats available. Only things I noticed were "Pure" broadband, $30/month with a contract required... and all I can get now at my address is 1.5M internet. Looks Like I will stick with Comcast for internet despite the fact my internet bill will nearly double in three months
This new plan is available in Florida but not in all areas yet. I wish my upload was faster like yours, but that is part of the limitation of DSL. It is still better than Comcast in my area since too many people are sharing the same line in my neighborhood.
Considering I pay for the lowest plan Time Warner offers, I can't complain about the speeds. It's actually faster than I thought...
